Gourmet Frog — Restaurant in Highwood

I wanted to give this a better rating, but both my spouse and I agreed that it’s not the same as it used to be. 4-5 years ago, it would 100% have 5 stars. The quality is just not what it used to be. The pricing is moderate, but just know even if you get the smallest cake from the premium selection (such as the chocolate mousse cake) it will cost you close to $60. The cake was on the more dry side, and overly sweet. It actually tasted like the candy Smarties. Super chalky, and almost artificially sweet. Appearance of places don’t matter to me unless it’s crumbling with rats everywhere, so the rating is not based off of it. That being said, it is a strange looking bakery. It looks like a New York deli, if it was in a subway station. Outdated, and doesn’t fit in for what they’re selling. Majority of the space that the counters are in are taken up by random gifts, like another commenter said it seemed more like a gift shop than a bakery. I’m sure there’s some tasty things on the menu, but for what I had purchased, I will not be driving 40min away...

I figured it’s time to write a review since my family has been buying cakes an desserts from the Gourmet Frog for almost 30 years. I bit into a vanilla meringue last night, Christmas Eve 2021 and it is still the same amazing flavor and texture I remember from the 90’s. My husband ordered the most expensive cake in the store. It was a berry chocolate mousse cake. I picked it up without looking inside the box. I arrived home and the cake was totally lopsided. One side was twice as tall as the other. I sent pictures to the store. I called the next day and the daughter said her Dad was going to call me. I never received a phone call.
