Barrel & Boar BBQ Factory — Restaurant in Hocking Township

Overall, I appreciated Barrel and Boar's focused menu, but thought their execution was uninspired.

I ordered the Cuban sandwich, which was a decent sandwich, but not a traditional Cuban. They cannot be penalized for their interpretation of the sandwich, but my bread was soggy, rather than toasted and pressed. The pulled pork was juicy and flavorful, but the flavor of the ham, swiss and pickles were lost because the pork was overpowering. The mustard did shine through, however. The sandwich felt imbalanced and as a result, the integrity of the Cuban was lost.

My husband ordered the burrito, with pulled pork which included beans and macaroni. The texture of the burrito was uniformly dense and lacked any strong flavor identity. He had the tater tots, which were good, but not unique.

I also ordered a side of brussel sprouts, which were sauteed and covered in a mustard sauce. I love mustard and brussel sprouts, but these were greasy and I think the mustard was not only overpowering, but also not the most complimentary flavor to the brussel sprouts.

Lastly and perhaps most importantly, I ordered the brownies with bacon and a maple glaze. I actually think the bacon was completely unnecessary because the brownie on its own was perfect as is. The brownie was fudgy and decadent. It melted in my mouth and the choice of chocolate, which tasted slightly bitter (which I liked) like a dark or semisweet chocolate was used, was the perfect choice to compliment the fudgy, sweet richness that was...

We sat down and browsed the menus before our server came to the table, deciding on what we would like to order. She informed us that they were very busy over the weekend and that most of what we wanted was not available. This, of course was not her fault, and we said as much to her before deciding on alternatives. When some of the items came out, they were cold, which she quickly rectified, that was appreciated. She did forget to bring out some of our order, and she had it taken off of the bill.

My issues started when we went to pay and the dark haired lady with the arm tattoos decided to lecture me rudely about why the item was removed from our bill and just being crude and disrespectful about how she was the only server and they had a full house. While I am sure she was busy, there were at least 3 people in front of house for 5 tables (not a full house). I respectfully informed her that we were never rude or anything less than polite to our server and that I didn't appreciate being lectured for service issues on their end as a paying customer. She even needed to make the comment that "well you don't have to come back".

To our server, you deserve a better place to work. You were great, especially dealing with all the issues.

To the cashier (manager?), maybe next time, get up and help out if there are issues instead of taking it out on a customer for no reason. Customer service is still a thing, and one that you would be wise to...

Never been here. Thought we’d stop in to try it after passing it for years. Boy, I wasn’t missing anything! First, we were greeted by a quite uninviting glance and demeanor from the waitress who seated us. She immediately asked us what drinks we wanted, and so we ordered our drinks. She brings them to us, waits to come back for us to open them (they were bottled/cans). When she returned, she notifies us that they no longer have pork or ribs—very matter-of-fact and unapologetic, like “too bad.” The only reason we stopped in was to try both of those. Had she let us know right away, instead of tricking us into opening our drinks and forcing us to spend some money, we’d have walked out.

Instead, we decided to stay since we already opened our drinks and were tired and hungry. We then wait quite some time before getting our meals. Brisket and wings were unbelievably dry, and chicken tasted like dog food.

And on top of it all, seating sucked. We were treated like we weren’t wanted there—like we weren’t regulars. It was dirty, there were gnats everywhere, the music was very much not family-friendly, and it was outrageously priced for the disgusting food we had.

If I could give zero stars, I would. I will never return and will tell everyone I know to never go there. I don’t understand all these good reviews. It’s like they are paid reviewers or something, because my experience was horrible!!!
