This might just be the last authentic place on earth. Up in the keewenaw there is a sense of peace and community that is rare, and the owners and staff of this hotel and restaurant are no exception. When I emailed the owner to see if I could squeeze a few nights in they accommodated me right away. I needed a bit of solitude and spent my time there alone, but I could see how this would be a great place to bring a family too. The old rooms were beautiful but the remodel had made them exquisite. They put a thoughtful touch into everything, from the metal and stone floor lightning to the integration of natural woods and local pieces of art. The rooms are airy and light, austere without being spartan. The lake views and sounds are unbeatable and the waves lull you into a deep tranquility. The added balconies are a great place to sip a nightcap cocktail from the skilled bartender or your morning coffee - fresh from the French press they provide. The staff are very kind and accommodating. My car broke down and I needed a ride to the auto shop 10 miles away and one of the staff schlepped me herself. Everyone was so helpful in finding me a tow and a garage. Now to the food- visit this restaurant. Just do it. Make the drive, reserve a table 30 minutes before sunset and feel what it's like to be completely sated in every sense of the word. The fare is incredible yet unfussy. The drinks are strong and well crafted. The view and the common sense of awe each sunset inspires makes you feel like you're a part of something bigger than yourself - you're experiencing it with every other person there. The unparalleled, unpretentious vibe of this place is one achieved by recognition of the gift that is the keewenaw and an intention to make that feeling tangible for each guest. My only suggestion is that they sell the Pendleton blankets they have in the rooms in their gift shop- I'd have thrown down on one of those in a heartbeat. Thanks for everything guys!

The view and location of the restaurant is stunning. Lake Superior is amazing. In terms of the atmosphere it was lovely. The dining area isn’t very large and if it’s packed and it probably will be, it can get pretty loud. We started the dinner with Risotto Fitters and the Brussel Sprout Salad. Both were just okay. I wouldn’t go back for either one. The Brussel sprouts in the salad were cold although roasted and I didn’t enjoy that. The fitters were good, and spiced well (almost Indian spiced I want to say) and both sauces that went with them were good. But again I would try new appetizers next time. For our main meal I made the mistake of ordering the garlic noodles. They were far too salty for my liking and I couldn’t eat the sauce. Although the brisket inside was great and the noodles were cooked correctly. My boyfriend preordered ribs and those were great. The green beans were not seasoned though. For dessert we got raspberry cheesecake and it was hands down the most amazing cheesecake we have ever had. It was so flavorful, and light and airy. We were both so impressed with it. We would go back just to eat that again and again. Next time I go im going to stick to getting their bbq.

I have been wanting to dine here for more than a decade. I finally made it, and even with all the anticipation it did NOT disappoint!! The small sample of food we had was world class. The Poutine was perfectly done, the Hot Nashville Chicken entree, was superb. The chicken was juicy, and had a healthy amount of heat more than most establishments are willing to flavor IMHO, and it was amazing. They were gracious enough to host us for a walk-in, and sat us at a table with an active reservation in 1 hour. We were going to be quick regardless. Our young child would have us out the door well before that, life as a parent, IYKYK. The food was excellent and didn't disappoint. I didn't have the opportunity to taste more than a 4/5 oz pour of beer, but the full bar and selection looked terrific. I don't know when I will be able to make it back. Dallas, TX is a journey, but I look forward to again this being an anchor to that next journey. Thank you to all the staff for their hospitality and amazing work chef!

Oops the spotty internet up here ate my first review so here goes again....A wonderful meal. One we will remember for a long time. Service was excellent.

French fries were as good as the food network lauded down state Hop Cat fries. Spinach salad with vinaigrette, blue berries and sun flower seeds was high quality (fresh and nothing skimpy). I had the smoked short ribs with mac n cheese and green beans. My husband had the pork chops with Carolina slaw and I'm not sure what else because the whole plate disappeared so fast. Portions were appropriate for feeding someone who has spent the day in outdoor sport. The smoked, dry rub ribs were stand on their own. Moist, just the right amount of fat, delicious. The sauce (do yourself a favor and have it on the side) added a whole new dimension to the ribs. Tangy, sweet, complex - transported me back to my wedding reception 25 years ago at the Swinging Door in Texas. Have some dry and with sauce - it's like 2 different kinds of BBQ. There are many excellent craft brews available for pairing with your meal. Corn bread muffins were moist and light. Leave room - you can take some home. Don't miss the desert. After we had chocolate cake and a flight of Whisky (we picked one kind aged 3 different ways but there are many to select from) followed by a walk on the beach. Delicious. A perfect evening.

I'm not opposed to traveling for a good meal. I once took a train from Paris to Dijon for a Michelin starred meal. Do your homework and you won't be disappointed. Fitzgerlads is a little restaurant. I counted 5 bar seats. There are several tables inside. There are several pic nic tables on an open air deck feet from Lake Superior - your experience on deck will be weather dependent. If you are Savvy enough to write a review, be savvy enough do to your homework. Services in the UP are spotty and in the Copper Harbor/ Eagle River area hit or miss. Strongly consider reservations plus checking the weather and plan to make them when you have bars on your phone. Brockway is where many folks can be found checking email and phoning out. Had no service at Lac LaBelle and Copper Harbor. We got in because there were 2 of us, we went early and it was the day after Labor Day.

Good luck and...

I had heard a lot about Fitz's and finally took the opportunity to get up there and try it out. It did not disappoint, but it was also not perfect. We started with the Rositto Fritters, which were good when combined with the dipping sauces. My wife ordered the whitefish, which was served on asparagus and covered with chutney. That really was a delight! Maybe not the best whitefish we have had up here, but it's definitely enjoyable. I chose the special, which was Pit Master's Pie. Basically , Shepard's pie but with their brisket and pulled pork, a layer of carrots and corn (which appeared to be from a bag of frozen veggies) and top with the garlic mashed potatoes and served with a side of sautéed greenbeans. The first taste I had was the potatoes, of course being on top. As Paul Hollywood might say, "If you're going to call it garlic, make it the hero." It was there but didn't pack a punch. When I got to the meat, however, that changed everything. Wow, the flavor of those two meats was incredible. Not overly smoky, but tender and flavorful! It really made the dish. The layer of corn and carrots didn't bring anything to the party. With meat that good, I would have added a layer of fire roasted vegetables to enhance the experience. The side of green beans was well seasoned, but someone couldn't take time to properly prep them and remove the stems? Other side notes; if you are there when the sunsets bring dark glasses because the shades are not enough. Not a complaint, as the setting sun is worth the squinting! The cocktails had too much ice, but this seems to be a trend everywhere. And having to ask for refills of water? All-in-all, it is well worth the trip. We will be back, and this time, I will reserve the...
