I first noticed this place when passing by on my way to take the Sam Houston boat tour of the ship channel and made a note to return another time for breakfast. While the promised "Best breakfast in Texas" on the sign may be a little over the top, Frank's did not disappoint.
We arrived at around 9:30 am, and the place was bustling with all different kinds of people from whole families with small children to men who had recently gotten off of work at the port. Despite the number of people, we were still immediately seated and our waitress got us started off with menus and coffees. Upon taking a look at the food on offer, you see that the breakfast menu includes both traditional breakfast items as well as more unique options like wings and eggs, baby beef liver and onions, and pork chops and waffles.
We went with the special (2 bacon, 2 sausage, 2 eggs, grits or hashbrowns, and 1 pancake) as well as a grilled chicken taco with a side of fried okra. When we received our order, it quickly became obvious that this place offers some of the best value for money in town. Our plates were humongous. The taco was stuffed so full that we had to eat it with a fork and knife with the pancake barely fitting on the plate. The overall flavor of the food was nothing spectacular, but then at a place like this you don't expect it to be. It tasted like a diner breakfast is supposed to. And at prices of $10 for the special and $6 for the taco (honestly more like a burrito), there were no complaints from our side.
I live in the East End not too far from Frank's, so I will definitely be adopting this as a breakfast spot, especially when I want a ton of...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreSo, I recently seen a reel on Instagram of a guy, giving the most horrible review on Franks Grill. He said that the grits were the worst dam grits he had ever tasted, because they were bland. I disagree with his "review" as a whole and I truly dislike the avenue in which he chose to do so. The reel definitely showed ignorance on his part because, while I can agree on the different locations not having the same quality of food, he failed to mention WHICH LOCATION he was at (that hurts the chain as a whole). Like being careful of laying a piece of beef in the same place a piece of pork was cooked, he also don't realize what seasoning a dish like grits, could do to an individual, which could be why there is salt and pepper at each table, to put as little or as much "seasoning" as one wishes. Food allergies vary so much, to where, its just safe to make a dish, like grits, bland, and leave it to the individual to personalize it to their taste. Also, a dish like grits, people not only add salt and pepper, but, there are some that will add syrup, sugar, jelly, etc. I have been going to Franks Grill for over 20 years (first, to the Telephone location, when Telephone burned, I followed the staff to the Clinton location), and I don't mind receiving "buttered bland grits" and having the option to add the salt and pepper provided (I don't like my eggs "seasoned" either), and will continue to support Franks Grill, until otherwise felt. I hope others are more understanding and opened minded and don't let a negative "review" like the one mentioned, ruin your experience at Franks Grill...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI am sorry but this place is absolutely horrible compared to the one in Pasadena. I literally work 3 doors down from this place and I have "tried" to eat there 3 times in the last year. For my 1st experience, I ordered a Chef salad HOW DO YOU MESS UP A SALAD you may ask well its easy, you serve egg shell along with the egg that is in the salad. My 2nd experience I ordered breakfast. Eggs were hard and dry and the hash browns were taken from the breakfast buffet, it was a huge pile of soft and mushy potatoes. My 3rd & LAST experience was today... I ordered a chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and side salad. Where do I begin???? The chicken fried steak is a cheap frozen patty that can not be cut with plastic utensils, my side salad was great and I received an 8oz container of dressing, I ordered both the Chicken Fried Steak and mashed potatoes with gravy of which I received another 8oz cup of grave (not nearly enough for the clump of potatoes or the hard as a rock frozen patty....
