We stopped by here on our way home from Starved Rock because it looked so cute. Their website boasts animals, shops, and great food.
Here’s the good from our trip: The property is GORGEOUS. There were lots of animals including free range peacocks which our toddler loved! The shops were cute but closed (due to the pandemic I assume.) The staff was so so so kind. Our waitress was wonderful and checked on us frequently. We ordered the onion loaf for the table which was pretty good.
Here’s the negative: We had to send our water cups back TWICE for not being cleaned properly. There was literally small pieces of gunk stuck to the inside of our cups. The waitress, however, was so kind when she replaced them. We were super excited for our meals and ordered what the waitress suggested to us (two $30 strip steaks), coconut shrimp, and Mac and cheese for our daughter. What we received was so disappointing. The strip steak was fatty and WAY overcooked. It was definitely low quality meat and not worth $30. There was absolutely no seasoning on the meat and it was sitting in a pool of oil. The coconut shrimp had way too much batter on it and tasted more like a funnel cake. And our Mac and cheese was KRAFT Mac and cheese. I can buy a box of Mac and cheese for less than a dollar. It was so disappointing. To top it all off, the two of us that ate the strip steak came home sick with belly aches.
We paid $100 for a genuinely BAD meal. The food was not good and not well made. It’s clear that the owners are cutting costs by offering lower quality food.
Considering how beautiful the property is and that the owners live in the stunning home directly behind the restaurant, you would expect them to put a little more consideration into the quality food they offer. I really wanted to leave there thrilled with my experience but unfortunately it was quite...
Read moreWe went on a Sunday for the Brunch (I highly recommend a reservation) there was plenty of parking however some of it was a pretty good walk to the door however there were several handicap accessible spots. When we were seated I noticed the tables were nicely spaced apart which is good when you are trying to get to and from the buffet line or if you were to need wheelchair or walker accessibility. On this day they offered a very nice mimosa flight and Bloody Mary drink options. We enjoyed the mimosas but didn't try the bloody mary. The food was outstanding, there was a variety of salads and hot options both of the breakfast and the lunch type foods. The desserts were so plentiful they have their own buffet line. There were choices of all types, chocolate, cream, fruit, & nuts way to many to mention. The server was very nice however appeared to be stretched pretty thin as some at our table's drinks were not refilled and were not offered one until we were preparing to leave, we had several dirty plates that sat on the table most of the time we were there. The restaurant setting is beautiful and very country with all sorts of birds walking around the property. There is a little store on the grounds that is open on the weekends, the lady who was working in there was very nice and super helpful in finding what you need no...
Read moreWe had a large family group and called for a reservation far in advance plus called the day before to inform them several couldn't make it but gave the exact number for our group 14 or so specifically asking to be sat at one table as they've done it in the years prior. We arrive and it's two separate tables and my 87 grandmother asked what happened and why they couldn't accommodate us and why they would agree to host us if they didn't have the proper place to which she was yelled at by an older gentleman and lied to about how he had tried to call however didn't acknowledge that she had just called the day prior to update the number of guests. Our servers were great food took a while but as we had a large table it was fine then they bring the over $400 bill to my grandparents and embarrassingly make him sign off on the gratuities added to the party as if he wouldn't pay it. Though nothing of the sort would have ever been said. Our grandparents look forward to their Christmas dinner every year and have been having it at Hanks for quite a few years without issue. The host this year was rude our entire visit though no one said anything to him even after he yelled at an elderly lady it was not our servers fault about any seating mishaps and we're tipped generously I would check elsewhere for larger groups, I know we...
