Another landmark restaurant in Crystal Lake. Built in 1949, it still exudes the vibes. (Except for the glow of the gambling machines, but anyway) The entire place has fantastically gaudy, tiki-bar-type accents that set tone. Especially the grass skirt type fringe around the edge of the bar. One is immediately transported to some forgotten high-school/college memory that may or may not be a fond one... but I digress. Egg rolls are really good. Not greasy. Our visiting friends were craving the rolls they remembered, and they didn't disappoint. Also, the Mai Tais and whatever unique juice they put in them work well as potent counterbalance! They are red, clear, and addictive. This is one of those spots that pack out on weekends with the locals. If you aren't into the kitsch, you probably might want to skip it, but that and the food is PRECISELY what keeps all the other people coming back!

I have tried this restaurant several times over the years but am never impressed with the food or drinks. It has a huge local following that must not leave Crystal lake. My wife had a Mai Tia which seems to change every time we go there. The egg rolls had the strangest crust I ever had on one. My wife had Hong Sue Har Pea pod and it was just marginal. I had the Beef Mushroom Kew and the gravy or sauce was like paste. I will wait 6 months and review it again.

I’ve come here since I was 6, and it’s always been an awesome place I’ve loved. Even though I live a thousand miles away and work at a tiki bar professionally I never miss going to The Breakers when I’m back home. It’s not gourmet and it dosnt have any Michelin stars but it’s such a special place that’s survived decades because it’s so great. It’s too often I wish I was siting at the padded red bar enjoying the mai tai with some beef fried rice.

The restaurant itself looks cozy—not modern, but warm and inviting. It smelled amazing, and we were so excited to try the food. However, the waitress assigned to our table seemed like she wasn’t suited for customer service. When we arrived, we told her it was our first time there and that we were excited to try the menu. She didn’t seem interested at all, which we let slide since we’re not picky about those things.

We ordered drinks: a Tropical Itch and the famous Mai Tai. Both tasted more like whiskey than rum, which was odd and not what we expected. They weren’t very impressive, but we didn’t want to let that ruin our experience. Then we ordered appetizers. We asked to switch the egg rolls for crab rangoons because we don’t eat pork, and another waitress kindly helped us make the change.

Later, when our original waitress came back to take our main order, I asked if they had spicy Japanese peppers. With an unnecessarily rude tone, she said, “This is a Chinese restaurant, not a Japanese restaurant.” I clarified by asking if they had any Chinese spicy peppers instead, and she responded, “What you see is what we have,” with the same attitude. At that point, we canceled our order. Her rude demeanor from the moment we walked in was already bad, but that response was the final straw.

I work in customer service, and this is not how customers should be treated—especially when it’s their first time visiting and they’re unfamiliar with the menu. It was disappointing because we were genuinely excited to try the place, but this experience left a bad taste...

Heart breaking. I took my father to this historical landmark of suburban McHenry County out of Crystal Lake for dinner one evening as he had not been there in many years. (Since my parents dated in high school) Whereas, I had been there many times, helped the prior owners with odds and ends, and even attended events there. I thought it would be a nice treat for him to experience again.

Unfortunately, we learned it had been bought by new owners after nearly 50 years under original ownership. While at first it appeared promising as the interior decor changes were done in the spirit of the old restaurant, it became clear the new ownership did not have a thorough understanding of what made the restaurant so special. The food was similar but lacked the original recipe's distinctions. The basics such as pot stickers and chili sauce were no longer available even as a custom order. The service was just ok, however after asking about the old owners the waitress who seemed to be involved with the new owners began to turn cold on us and the service declined further. We were just loyal patrons trying to catch up on one of of favorite restaurants happenings. But she was having none of it.

I will give the place another year and try again to see if they are able to work out the kinks. But as it stands now, quite a disappointment. Hope they get their stuff...

Very Disappointed!!! We used to come here all the time it was our favorite place for anniversaries, birthdays, etc. What happened?! Cheap new management? First of all we were greeted by a 13 year old that just pointed to us where our table was, it took at least 20 min for our waitress to finally come and take our drinks order, while we were waiting for our food we didn't get those chow mein noodles that we used to get before our meal, we got 3 shrimps and 2 very rough spring rolls for appetizers, finally food was here but it was a TOTAL DISAPPOINTMENT, BTW we didn't have silverware on our table so when I asked the waitress if we can get some she made a very sarcastic comment "I guess is too hot to eat it with your hands huh" definitely not a good thing to say to someone who's already uncomfortable with the service they're receiving. Back to the food part - fried rice had green and red peppers which totally messed up with the flavor it was awful, the egg foo youngs were horrible! Dried, hard to eat and it tasted like grass, chicken was ok (we missed the old chef) to closed the night we didn't get the almond cookies we used to get at the end of the meal. We used to loved this place specially my boyfriend who has been coming here since he was a kid. Not sure if...
