I ate here recently for a family member's birthday. I've eaten here multiple times before Covid and had a five star experience across the board those times. I don't often leave reviews, I felt I had to based on my past experiences and the reputation as I understand it.
First the good: The server was excellent. I don't recall her name because I was not there when she introduced herself. That being said, she came by often and refilled everyone's drinks more than I expect for any restaurant. She also took great care to make sure everyone's orders were accurate and delivered correctly.
To add onto that, the rolls, sauces (I highly recommend the apple butter), salads, and soups (I had the broccoli cheddar) were excellent and I would order them easily as an entree in another restaurant, possibly even here if the price and portion size were right. The mashed potatoes and gravy were also great as a side, among the best I've had in a long time.
Now the bad: The steak I had (the 8oz ribeye) was quite possibly the worst steak I've ever had, not even mentioning the ~$25 price tag (more if you want a bigger steak or different cut, not including chopped steak or a hamburger). It appeared to have been cooked to the right temperature, but it was maybe a quarter inch thick at the most. It had no crust whatsoever, and I had to add salt and pepper more than once. The worst thing, however, was the fact that the meat was chewy and sinewy in texture.
I would understand if this was a one-off for just me. However, my sister, father, and grandfather ordered the same thing and only my father had one that even looked appealing. It tasted better than my own because it was a slightly thicker cut and was able to be cooked in a manner I actually like. At least one person also ordered the filet mignon and had similar complaints (although I did not personally).
Now, I thought it was just the steak but an uncle and aunt also tried the catfish and onion rings. They thought the catfish were about average in quality, but the onion rings were far from ideal. They described the onion rings as close to raw with only a little bit of breading. I didn't try them myself, but these family members usually are not picky at all.
The atmosphere is overall average. No particular comment, but if I were to try some of the entertainment I might change my mind.
Overall: Personally, I would just go to a Texas Roadhouse or similar chain restaurant if you're looking for a decent steak and don't care about the sides, rolls, or appetizers. You'll probably also be getting a better price and atmosphere if you're having just your average lunch or dinner. It used to be much better here and the rolls especially still live up to that.
I hate to say to eat a chain but the steak quality was just so poor in my experience that I felt I was...
Read more03/22/25 - I’ve been going to The Beef House since 2010 when I was first dating my wife. I have seen many changes since then but the one thing that doesn’t change is the food.
The Beef House for us is an hour's drive from Lafayette, but it's well worth it. You wait to be seated before a server is assigned. We like to think we're regulars and request Kellie, as she's been our favorite server since before June 2020.
Last night, we met Angie for the first time, and I guess the look on my face gave it away that something wasn't right, because she immediately asked if we had someone else in mind. The only way to disguise my face was honesty. Angie was very kind to us and went to get Kellie, our regular and favorite server. Later Angie was joking about it at the end of our night.
The treat is the fresh, warm rolls they bring out before the meal, and a highlight here. They bring homemade strawberry jam and apple butter. I like butter on my rolls, and you see it melt as you spread it. Our kids enjoy the strawberry jam as well as the apple butter.
Like I mentioned, our favorite server is Kellie, so we make sure to go on Friday nights when we know she'll be working. This place doesn't offer deals or discounts for anyone, so it can be an expensive night out. We take a family drive and make it a treat night
We take our five kids, and they are all well-behaved, so Kellie is not afraid of them, and she treats them like people because she knows that even our 5-year-old can place her own order. The kids like the children menu as there’s something for each of them.
We like to order Cherry Coke because it was made with grenadine, but we found out that they are no longer using it. You can taste the difference between fountain and grenadine. It doesn’t matter because you have to have a soda. The girls like root beer. You always get water.
Your meal includes a salad (green, Caesar, cottage cheese, or applesauce). You also get a choice of soup (vegetable, broccoli cheese, or New England chowder). If you like chowder then make sure to try it here. It’s delicious and my favorite. I also go with the Caesar salad. My wife likes the vegetable or cheese broccoli so she switches it.
Steaks 🥩 My wife orders the filet mignon, and I order the 10oz ribeye. Our steak is made to order. My wife likes hers well done, while I like mine medium well. I've never had a problem. They are cooked to perfection.
Kellie does great checking on us, and I'm sure Angie will offer the same service. Our drinks are always kept filled and the roll basket is never empty.
I say make a date night and take the drive. Always a fun time for our family. Give it a try and make sure to ask for...
Read moreMy family decided to go to the beef house for new years eve dinner. Our waitress Ayla was amazing, but the food not so much... We'd ordered the frog legs which were ok, the breading was a little soggy but had good flavor. We also ordered the bang bang shrimp which was amazing.
Our entrees were the chicken alfredo pasta for our 16yo daughter. She said it was alright, but not great. I had the 16oz ribeye med/rare with onion rings and chicken noodle soup. The soup was great and packed with flavor. The ribeye was more on the medium to medium well side when it came out, and lacked flavor although it was very tender. The onion rings were decent as well.
The wife ordered the 12oz lobster tail with cheese and broccoli as the side. After one bite of the lobster, my wife asked me to try a bite. We both agreed it was extremely tough and dry. My wife asked our server for a new one after and informed her that it was just overcooked and recommended that the next one not be cooked as long. She was very apologetic and professional. What I can only assume was the manager came out and apologized and then informed us that he "had the owner try our lobster we'd sent back"? He also informed us that if we wanted another tail, and if didn't meet our expectations that he wouldn't take it off the bill and recommended we just order something else. With the lobster tail meal being $67, we decided to pass and my wife and I just split my ribeye.
Our server tried to offer my wife dessert but she declined saying she was full from the rolls, soup, salad and half of my ribeye.
After receiving the check, our waitress did bring my wife a complementary piece of strawberry cheesecake to take home and once again apologized. We thanked her for everything and reassured her that nothing about the dinner was in any way her fault, and have a great evening.
Overall it wasn't a terrible experience, but I doubt we'll be back...
