Midtown Family Restaurant — Restaurant in Iowa City

We were illegally asked for papers for my brothers service dog. After we just decided to leave because of that, we were harassed again by the waitress who threatened to get her lawyer son. Upon walking out the doors leaving, we were threatened that the cops were going to get called even though we were leaving. I walked my handicapped brother to the car and walked back in while my husband was paying for the drinks we had recieved before getting up to leave, I walked back in to find him begging the gentleman behind the counter to just let him pay before we left while he was continuing to argue with him about the dog. He verbally said I am not argueing with you I just want to pay for what we recieved tip the waitress to leave. All of the animosity was unnecessary and very unprofessional when we were not trying to argue with them to let the pet stay. I ordered the chicken fried chicken. The vegetable of the day was corn. I received my meal and I noticed that something smelled rotten on my plate. When I tasted the corn it tasted terrible. I let my waitress know the corn was rotten She said she'd go back and tell the kitchen staff about the quality of corn that they're serving their customers. How the kitchen staff could overlook not only the smell but the taste of the food there serving to their customers is beyond me. The fact that I got served rotten food wasn't what made me upset it was the fact that no management came out and spoke to me about it are you in fact had to go out of my way to talk to a manager about it and all he said was I'm sorry. No discount off my bill. It was just surprised me poor quality of food. It makes me wonder about the rest of their food there serving the customers if they're trying to serve rotten food to me that is corn what else are they serving...

I'm updating my review from 7 years ago. My family has started to go again more recently and boy, has my opinion changed. From a 2-star to a 4-star rating to be more exact. I hardly ever rate anything 5 star, but I considered it just now. The place has really grown on us. We love the cheese stick appetizer, and we are pretty certain they are the best we've had at any local restaurant. They serve breakfast all day and we've definitely taken advantage of that. The dinners are great and the sandwiches come together very well. They have specials all the time including the fall-off-the-bone ribs. If you want some great service and good food in a home-town place, this is a great place to go. The prices are pretty good too.
