Nestled between cornfields along Route 30, Anchors Down Crabhouse in Thomasville, Pennsylvania, is the last place you'd expect to find top-tier seafood. But don’t let its humble exterior fool you—step inside, and you'll be greeted by a rustic yet modern atmosphere that's both clean and inviting. It's the perfect spot for a date night or a relaxed family meal where conversation flows as freely as the drinks.
Though originally from the area, my husband and I found ourselves back in town and on the hunt for some fresh crabs. My husband had heard glowing reviews about Anchors Down, and I was familiar with its predecessor, Rte 30 Seafood, so we decided to give it a try. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with warmth and professionalism by the hostess, who seated us at the bar while we waited for a table. The wait was brief—less than ten minutes—and Kelsey, who served us both at the bar and at our table, made us feel right at home. She was friendly, knowledgeable about the menu, and could mix a Gin Fizz with the best of them. Her attentive service added to the overall charm of the experience.
As for the food, we couldn’t resist trying the Big Poppa Boil. Having had my fair share of seafood boils, I know they can be hit or miss—whether the corn is overcooked, the potatoes are mushy, or the sausage is boiled to bland oblivion. But let me tell you, this boil was perfect. Each element was cooked to absolute perfection: the shrimp were plump and bursting with flavor, the andouille sausage had a satisfying snap with every bite, and the king crab legs were succulent and sweet. There was no weak link in the dish, and every bite was a revelation.
Having relocated to the Boston area years ago, we’ve had the pleasure of dining at some of the best seafood spots around the Boston Harbor. But Anchors Down Crabhouse? It holds its own against some of the finest in the industry. The flavors were as fresh and vibrant as anything you'd find in New England, with the added bonus of a truly welcoming and relaxed atmosphere.
In short, if you find yourself in the Thomasville area, make sure to set your course for Anchors Down Crabhouse. This hidden gem is worth its weight in seafood gold. Two thumbs up for Anchors Down—it’s an experience you won’t...
Read moreI went there expecting to hopefully have a good time with my family, thankfully when I walked in I was greeted with great service. However that’s about the only positive I can say, everything went downhill after that. They took our drinks and we ordered appetizers, when they came out I was horrified at the sight I saw. The crab ball appetizers came out and looked like balled up horse feces, they tasted how you’d expect cooked horse feces to taste like which were rolled in sand, deep fried far longer than they should’ve and were served as “crab balls”. After scarfing the feces down, our entrees came out. They were all as you’d expect from a restaurant with appetizers like that, except for the chicken alfredo. It came out with macaroni noodles, which looked edible until I realized it was far from. The Alfredo sauce tasted sour as if the ingredients were expired, the chicken was as dry as jerky and the garlic bread tasted like bread. I had taken maybe 5 bites until I felt like I needed to throw up, I stopped eating and waited until we left. As soon as I got home I threw the food away, proceeded to go into the bathroom...
Read moreWe were very excited to try this place since it is close to home and we love seafood. We were not disappointed. Checked it out for the first time 2 weeks ago and stopped back again last night because we enjoyed it so much. The inside has been updated and is clean and cute! We had the hush puppy appetizer last time and we actually regretted not getting them again last night, but the entrees are generous so we did not really need an appetizer. Well we will get them next time anyway! I had the crab cake last time and hubby got the haddock. We loved them both! Last night we had the fried shrimp and the fish tacos! (Both were also great!) I really want to try the crabby mac n cheese next time and the crab legs. SO many choices! The salad and rolls were good as well as the french fries and applesauce...we just wish we had room for dessert! Kelsey our server/bartender made us a GREAT orange crush and was so helpful and friendly. Several people stopped by our table to check on us as well. Happy to have a new local restaurant to add to our date night rotation. Thank you for a great...
