Recently moved to Westport and have been looking for a butcher, which is where I'm accustomed to buying my meats. There aren't many around here, but Jackson seemed to be the closest. I got to Latham's about an hour before close and I didn't get to see their full selection, as they were already pulling stock from view to close (reason for 3 stars). They did still have a few ribeyes out, no bone, of which I chose two. They were nice thick cut and marbled, at about 1.5lbs each. They were awesome and I made 4 steaks from the two, however, they were pricey. While I'm not expecting Walmart pricing, $74 for two steaks would not be an affordable option for me to travel 35 miles each way to get. If all area butchers price accordingly here, $24 -$25 per lb, my option may be to buy on the hoof. At that price, I'd typically get dry aged and trimmed for a special meal. For this quality I'd think $15-$18 per lb would be reasonable. But, the market sets the table, I just thought that's what I'd pay at a 5 star $$$ restaurant in Nashville, not what I'd pay for regular...
Read moreFinally food with flavor and is well cooked. We've been in the area for a year and have had a hard time finding good local food. We're not into the heat and serve big chain "restaurants" because they're disgusting. I've visited 3 times for lunch and was impressed every time. The meatloaf was awesome, full of flavor and juicy. The fried fish with hushpuppys even surprised me. That is usually something I prefer at home because it is too bland or too salty. Not here the fish cornmeal had real flavor. The side dishes I've had were mostly well seasoned and delicious (hushpuppies, mashed potatoes brown gravy, stewed tomatoes amazing, sweet potato casserole yes please). There are a few items I've had which could use some improvement. The boiled cabbage was over cooked and probably unavoidable being on a steam line. The greens were flavorless. Better than too salty like most places but needed some ham and seasoning to really make it perfect. Other than that it's becoming one of my favorite places to...
Read moreWe decided to get ribs here because of the price and the reviews. We come through Jackson quite often and were excited at the thought of finding a place to eat at everytime we visit. The reviews on the ribs and green beans were so great that we just had to try them. Well, we paid over 30.00 for a meal for 2 people. The brisket had NO flavor and the bbq sauce tasted so twangy that it didn't help at all. The green beans had meat in them that tasted old and they were sweet with sugar. The baked beans had no meat and were just warmed up pork n beans. The ribs had some pretty good flavor, but were so dried out that we just picked at them and threw most of the full rack in the trash along with the brisket and beans. It was such a disappointment. : ( we couldn't post this unless we gave at least one star but we give minus 5...
