I recently moved to PA, so finding spots to eat other than pizza and Chinese spots (nothing wrong with them, but having options is important to me) Two friends of mine suggested we get up for dinner and they suggested the Fat Squirrel. I was intrigued and met them for dinner. I got there a bit earlier and had some time to look over the menu... that was a huge mistake in the best way.. EVERYTHING read amazing.. seriously,
I was born in India, and to be honest haven't seen much Indian food places since I have been here in Greensburg. Ive been to the city a few times, but either was busy shooting photography or was there for a baseball game. The samosa chat nachos were absolutely amazing, I can promise you they were amazing cause if I see Indian food at a restaurant I try it and have no problem giving my honest review (I am nice about it, not one of those people who call the chef out and ruin their day lol. But if you are new to Indian food or wanted to try some but not sure where to find it, Please do try it here. The flavors are spot on and remind me of my mums cooking. It does have a very mild kick of spice so if you are not big on spice you may want to pass or ask if they can dumb it down. I loved it as read on the menu and was happily shocked it was that good. (So much so that I did call them and voice my two cents.)
Dinner: I wanted 5 things, let me be honest about that lol, BUT... I kept some dignity and ordered the Steak medallions and steak fries, The sauce and flavor was specular and the combination of the small breaded onions and mushroom risotto (I could be completely wrong on that part) but I also didn't stop to find out. I get my steak medium rare and it was nothing shy of perfect and medium rare. Again not a complainer but I feel as if they give you the option to have it cooked how you want it, id hope said place get it right. They did. It was perfect.
The dessert: My friends told me the carrot cake here is to die for, I love carrot cake as that was my mum and I favorite as well. I didn't get it, like I didn't get a few of the other dinner options BECAUSE I KNEW IT WAS A GREAT EXCUSE TO COME BACK
So I did what any person would do and read the dessert option off the wall that read BLUEBERRY PIE SHAKE. Yes, you read it correctly. If you wanted to find out how it came to the table... don't worry baby bird, I'll feed ya.
Tall 1940's diner ice cream shake tall cup
Vanilla / blueberry ice cream (again could be wrong but at this point I don't care the food won and I let diabetes take over.)
Stay with me, the best is coming..
Okay, so at the brim of the tall glass you see pie crust around the brim. Raj, what's holding the lovely pie crust to the brim??? Yes, yes indeed, it was vanilla icing
but wait....theres more.
A perfectly cut slice of blueberry pie sat on top of the glass to finish the Picasso looking dessert.
As far as suggestions on how to eat this... I did this. I don't think it's wrong but I also don't care. I set the pie on a separate plate and just took a bit of everything. Started with the frosting/bite of pie/and chased it with vanillabluberry liquid ice cream and that's how you achieve supreme Itus OR food coma there really is no wrong conclusion or ending.
I am going to leave the HOW MUCH DID A PERSON SPEND blank or if I have to click it I'll guess as my friends did not let me see...
Read moreFantastic gem of a place!! Hits all the right notes of "down-home PA" while maintaining consistent strides toward creativity, craftsmanship and sustainability. Wished I could have returned (was there on a Sunday) but they are closed on early weekdays at this point. My finicky friend felt the chicken gyro was the best they'd ever tasted. They also had a mushroom toast-like bruschetta app which was indeed divine. I had a pot roast sandwich and wasn't disappointed and noted that the same bread was used for my friend's appetizer as was on my sandie - which I give kudos to the kitchen/creators for finding ways to keep the stores fresh by keeping inventory smaller. Sometimes a little rain must fall - my soup I think was the 3 onion (a standard of the menu), while I had ordered the soup du jour (a coconut curry offering) but I had gotten the sense that we were quite literally our young waiter's 1st solo table and the onion soup was a delicious and slightly spicy, likely vegetarian, variant so I did not feel slighted. The portions are decent and lean toward the generous - so there were many things I really wanted to try (spicy broccoli! oh - to which region does their falafel lean? the agony of not wanting to be a glutton //where's my bucket??// ;)
The end of a magical meal that caught both of us by surprise (so glad I pushed to try it out!) had me wistful and the handwritten sign just above my friend's head proclaimed $10 signature artisnal milkshake creations.... Suffice to say I made a bit of a compromise with my inner guilt/shame [to-go box ordered for the non-liquid part of this dessert] and ordered the one at the top of the list (specific name lost to the caloric haze) it featured coffee ice cream topped with whipped cream, and the glass was rimmed with homemade icing to which a popular crunchy toasted cereal with a cinnamony sweet taste were affixed...and the whole soda fountain dream was topped with a locally-made bacon-encrusted glazed donut into which half of a pop-tart had crash landed. So my initial apprehension of the largess of spending another $10 on a milkshake which I certainly did not require was quickly cast aside. It bears repeating that I was disappointed that they were going to be closed the following two days - for both my friend and I wanted to try more things (but live 2 hours away).
Would certainly try to reroute past this place if I ever can afford the time. If you are in the Laurel Mountains area of PA I STRONGLY hope you give it a try - this is the kind of place America needs more of ~ in a way, it is a modern interpretation of the roadside diners of yesteryear (good food, friendly service) with an earnest yet modest helping of the best elements of...
Read moreI visited this establishment on Saturday for the first time after having heard that the place was great. For lunch I ordered the Three Onion soup and the Pittsburgh salad. The Three Onion soup was delivered in about 15 min. It looked like onions in a bowl of milk with a roll floating on the top. But, I tried it and it nearly made me sick! It was unbelievably awful. So, I pushed it to the side and the waitress took it away. She never said a word. Soon, my Pittsburgh salad arrived. It was a bowl full of purple loose-leaf lettuce.... not romaine that was described. Had a few veggies in it and was delivered with not-enough dressing to eat even the small sampling that I did. I basically ate the french fries off the top of the salad. That was the experience with The Fat Squirrel's food for my lunch. The dining area was cold - my guess would be 60 degrees or less. Everyone there had their jackets or coats on. When I left my feet were freezing. The acoustics were bad in the dining room. You could hear every world everyone was saying. The service was only so-so. Took a long time to get anything. I would definitely not recommend wasting an...
