Mary's Hideaway Bar and Grill — Restaurant in Johnsburg

Came for a late night snack and got the royal treatment!

Mary, yes THE Mary, and her whole family have started what is sure to be THE pizza, American cuisine, ice cream and social gathering place that North East Johnsburg and McHenry County have needed. From Kaitelynd behind the bar to Victor, Mary's son to Dave her husband you feel like you are home. They have an extensive and delicious menu. I came for a small Margherita pizza quickly upgraded to the 18" Titan, which I found out is named after Victor's German Shepard (seen in my picture). It turns out Mary's has several dishes named after the fur-babies like Titan and Scout!

Mary and the gang let me sample thier chilli 🌶 and it was what my dad might have made back when I was a kid. The fresh cherry cheesecake made by her daughter simply melted in my mouth!

All of this great food and atmosphere will have me coming back soon. But I think their new high end ice cream machines will have me coming back for ice cream drinks, cones and sundaes 🍨! Ask nicely and Kaitelynd might tell you about the icee flavors she has waiting for you! LOL

The 1st & 3rd Wednesdays are car show nights and make sure to join them at the grand opening on June 10th with Johnsburg's mayor cutting the ribbon.

So my wife suggested this place, saying she heard the food was great. I am new to lake county, so to my untrained eyes the Hideaway looked like every bar and grill around here. So you better believe I was happy that we showed up during the end of happy hour so I could get a cheaper buzz on. As I took my second shot of Fireball, I reluctantly opened the menu, thinking I would see the same old boring items. I couldn't believe how many jems were in this menu, Pizza Dog!!! The Barge!! Trust me you will be debating between between at least three different sandwiches. Then I saw a pizza come out and I needed that tavern style slice. Got The Capone w/ beef, gardinera, added green olives (cause I am weird like that), wife got a beef and I couldn't stop eating her fresh cut fries. I judge bars/restaurants on what I can see, and the place had that old time feel but clean, which is something that is super rare and the bathrooms are you kidding me, I couldn't believe how clean they were. I've been to Mary's a few times now, but the last time we went in for dinner, I was very disappointed. 9/15/2023. I wanted the fried perch. What I got was two pieces of overcooked fish, small, overcooked hushpuppies, and soggy veggies. The only saving grace to the meal was the coleslaw, but that isn't saying much. The cost for my meal was insane for the portion that I had and it didn't include anything else like a salad or soup. My husband got a burger and it was great. What really stinks about the place though is the service. They don't have a waitress there and it is just the bartender, who pays more attention to the bar patrons then those sitting at the tables.

I will be back. Other than the fish dinner, they have fantastic pizza, breakfast and burgers. Just this time...
