On our way back from Idaho we stopped at the Rockhouse coffee shop a favorite of ours when we go to and from Idaho to visit family. Staff are usually friendly and we don't ever have any issues however this time we ran into two young girls who were working behind the counter we didn't smile much weren't real talkative or friendly or at least not as much as we were used to with other staff we've encountered there on previous visits. My wife ended up purchasing a rockaccino ($6) with whipcream($0.75) a small jar of jelly($14)and a coloring book( $4) for a grand total of $24.75.
When the staff person rang it up she turned the machine(I believe it is a machine made by the company called square) towards my wife to select a tip option.)
Not thinking too much about it she selected a $4 tip because the bill presented to her on the screen was $24.75). It didn't dawn on her until we were driving off that she ended up tipping $4 on a $24.75 purchase of which most of it was for merchandise!! She would usually only tip for the coffee ... So in this case$1.35(which is a 20% tip on $6.75.
I don't know if this was intentional on the part of the staff to try and get additional tip or a ploy by the company but either it's a problematic situation and one that the company should address. At the very least when the customer is presented with the screen that shows the total it should be reiterated that if the customer's going to leave a tip to remember just to leave it on the purchase of the food item not the merchandise because the merchandise is already going to be taxed who in the world ever heard of tipping for merchandise. I know the tipping situation has gotten way out of hand and while we don't mind tipping and are always quite generous about it this really bothered us and likely we will not stop by there again and or if we do we will definitely be watching out for that situation so we don't get tangled up in it and end up spending more than we should on tipping I felt like this was a bit deceptive and though I don't want to claim to know the intention of the staff it was still deceptive and I hope that in the future this does not happen to...
Read moreThere is absolutely no reason this establishment should be this good. We found it driving from Reno to Boise after some 200 miles of barren Oregon public land with not so much as one bar of cellphone service let alone services. Our Garmin GPS was near 10-miles off on the location, so watch for their sign on the right if you're going North. The town is named ‘Jordan Valley.’ The coffee was excellent as was a wide array of foodstuffs and a smattering of souvenirs – nice souvenirs, not the stuff you see these days. Indoor and outdoor (covered) seating. Clean bathrooms. A most inviting oasis; A very...

The history of this site and the surrounding area is on the walls of the interior. Great place to acquire a history lesson, knowledge of the area you are driving through, and the family that helped establish it! There is a selection of toys for young children, clothing articles, and friendly folks! The young lady attending as the barista was informative and friendly. I really liked the post outside indicating general directions for travelers! Have...
