Johnny's Donuts — Restaurant in Kansas City

My trainer allows me 1 lonely little “Cheat Meal” each month. ONE, I tell you!!! So when that day rolls around, I am revving up ye olde engine and headed from Lee’s Summit into Kansas City for Johnny’s!!!!!!!!! The classic glazed is my favorite donut, and I’m a big fan of the cheeseburger and fries. My husband is over the moon for the tenderloin and chocolate Long John, and my picky eater son will inhale anything from there that you set in front of him! While I’ve read reviews on other platforms that yammer on about the “sketchy” location, the bulletproof glass that requires one to amplify the voice to be heard (a.k.a. “yell”), and the cash only policy, I contend that it’s not about that. The place has gotta be somewhere, and 43rd & Prospect is it! Bulletproof glass keeps the employees safe. How can you argue that? It’s not as if it’s the only place in the metro with it! And not every small business can necessarily afford the credit card/debit card fees, so cash is king. Just search the couch cushions and car floor for loose change, break open your piggy bank, or stop by the ATM on the way! Totally worth it for the satisfying treats that Johnny’s serves up…even if you can only have it...

I can't believe I lived in KC nearly my entire life but had never been to Johnny's until this visit! I can't say enough about the donuts..The glazed twists are delightful! Slightly crispy, golden outside with a light,airy inside that melts in your mouth. Fresh and sweet but not overwhelming. Equally as wonderful were the cherry pies or turnovers (not sure what they're called) We also had a cream cheese filled selection that was also a winner. The menu has something for everyone and every meal...We had a cheeseburger, a tenderloin sandwich, fries and an 8pc order of dark fried chicken only, which came with dinner rolls. EVERY ITEM WAS Fantastic! JUST GO THERE! YOU WONT BE DISAPPOINTED.

Caveats: CASH ONLY. The closest atm is about 3 blocks south. HOURS: open at 630 am and close at 3:30. TAKE-OUT only,no eating area, except the sidewalk. NO FOUNTAIN DRINKS but they offer a wide selection of cold cans and bottles.

After running 15 miles I knew I needed something delicious and fast! I took the risk and drove down to Johnny's donuts. The sign and building were a bit run down so I almost missed the parking lot.

It was lunch time but I also wanted their donuts. They made me this bacon cheeseburger with donuts as buns, fried mushrooms and a dr.pepper. after slipping my CASH under the glass window I went outside to wait. I barely waited 5 minutes before she knocked on the window.

After retrieving my HOT food from the drawer I sat outside on the sidewalk (no dine-in) and devoured this burger. The light, sweetness of the donuts paired perfectly with the juiciest burger I'd had in a long time. The mushrooms were perfectly fried and just the right size to pop in my mouth. Each bite was a bit of heaven.

Yes, the risk of Prospect Ave with a purse full of cash was worth it. I'd gladly take a friend and sit on that sidewalk again just to eat this donut burger again.
