What is this place? Took my 91 year old momma and my hubby to eat today (Sunday). Arrived around 3:30pm. Drove over an hour and a half to get there. We had never been there before-there is no clear indication to the entrance to the building. Once we figured out how to get inside and were seated in a booth we were asked what we wanted to drink, hubby:sweet tea, momma:decaf coffee, me: Diet Pepsi. Waitress: Diet Pepsi will be $1 more. I said “ok”, then waitress said “I’ll have to “make” the decaf coffee”, I said “ok”. She came back with a styrofoam cup of sweet tea, a styrofoam cup of ice a CAN of Diet Pepsi and later a cup of INSTANT DECAF COFFEE. (Momma was NOT impressed. After that long ride, I needed to potty-went to the ladies room and let me tell you something…..well truly I have no words….there are ZERO doors on the bathroom stall openings!!!! Only pieces of fabric (likely home sewn “curtains”) but just hung straight to the floor. No way to secure them closed for privacy…whoever came in just “peeped” in the curtain to see if that stall was occupied. WHAT!?!? Then the food came-it is a “family style” all you can eat restaurant. (I use that term loosely) They brought 3 pieces of COLD fried chicken (a leg, a thigh and a wing), 3/4 measuring cup of COLD mashed potatoes, 3/4 cup COLD canned green beans, 1 cup coarsely chopped cole slaw, 1 cup canned cooked apples, some kind of white gravy, 3 - 2.5” pieces of COLD ham, 1 measuring cup of what they referred to as meatloaf (it too was COLD with a TON of ketchup on it), 3 - 2” squares of cornbread, a whole cake. That so called meatloaf was nauseating! I would say it was either raw or pureed! The texture made me literally want to vomit! I couldn’t eat or look at the food after 2 small bites! Oh! Almost forgot about the 1/2 cup of pintos that were also canned and COLD. Now keep in mind-the portion sizes mentioned were to feed the entire family of 3!! Finally there’s the cost……it was $84.24!!! NO TIP LEFT! But here’s a TIP for them-cook homemade home cooked southern food!!! Bring it to the table HOT! Bring it in family sized portions! Make it WORTH $28.08 per person!! We will NEVER go back...
Read moreWhen I was a child, my Dad and I would go here periodically for the phenomenal food and how "cool" it was with all the decorations and stuff on the walls. To be able to write your name on the wall was just something that fascinated me as a child. Not only that, but I thought it was so cool to sit on school bus seats down in the music hall to listen to bluegrass music after dinner. When my Dad was still alive we would drive close to 2.5 hours one way just to go to Hillbilly Hideaway.
Over the years, I have come back to Hillbilly Hideaway to relive those memories and share new ones with friends. I recently went with my best friend and also my husband, who had never been to Hillbilly Hideaway before. Walking in, everything was just as i had remembered it. I even found my name written on the wall from so long ago. Food was still as delicious as I remembered and it was great to share those memories and new experiences with my friends and loved ones.
Hillbilly Hideaway may be tucked away back in the "middle of nowhere" but it certainly is worth the trip off the beaten path to go and experience what Hillbilly Hideaway has to offer.
Thanks for all the memories...
