Our stay at the Stock Farm Inn began with such high hopes. We had stopped for a coffee on a previous drive through Hopland, felt a good vibe, and decided to return for a stay, visit the wineries, test the restaurants.
Bad choice.
CHECKING IN
Our stay began with a game of Hide-and Seek with the elusive staff. There were posted signs with buried hints on how to find them. It took several attempts to catch one and, when we did, we won the keys to the room.
I am 72 years old, my wife 66. All the suites are upstairs. There are no elevators. (There was an elevator cloaked behind a curtain tagged out-of-order) .
Hate when that happens
It took 23 steps to reach the summit with our bags in tow.Winded and exhausted on my third and final trip to the top of the stairs a voice rang out, “Do you need any help?” Geez….
This place is out if you are 65+ and value your life (or own a portable heart defibrillator). Olympians and marathon runners only!
SUITE
We booked The Lawson Room (Room 200). Our first impression was very good. A large room, spacious, high ceilings…..then all hell broke loose.
The TV did not respond to the remote. After another game of Hide-and-Seek I found an employee (Caleb?) in the kitchen. Great kid, way too many responsibilities.
The TV would only work if you unplugged it from the back and reset the darn thing. It was the only way you could get the TV to talk to the cable box. Caleb did not understand why but …”that’s just the way it is.”
The bathroom was hellish. Before even starting our adventure we discovered pee stains in front of the toilet (not mine!). After a few minutes of running the water BOTH bathroom sinks backed up. There was a constant drip in the shower due to a bad seal of some kind. We had to place a wash rag over the shower drain to muffle the dripping noise.
We could not find an on/off switch/button to operate the spa tub. We just passed up the option. I had enough of playing Hide-and-Seek for one day. Needed to save my strength for the next day.
After tucking ourselves into bed the first night my wife said, “Look at that.” “Look at what?” She was pointing to a cobweb that not only covered the entire dome of side table lamp but the web attached itself all the way up to the 10-12 foot ceiling.
“What size spider built that thing?”
There was no...
Read moreWe had a great day in Mendocino. After eating a delicious lunch downstairs we went up to the room we rented. When we got in our room, we were super stoked to stay here, it was beautiful.
HOWEVER, the next morning we went out to breakfast. We checked that our key card still worked on our bedroom door and walked to the cafe. After breakfast we came back to the inn only to find ourselves locked out. You can see the key pad had "key won't work" written on it, but nothing else. No phone number nothing. There was no one there at all so I went next door to the Thatcher Hotel. A very nice lady helped us get in touch with the owner (who apparently doesn't have a key to his own hotel). It took over an hour to get someone there. We had to rush out since we were late to pick up our kids Once home, I called to speak to the manager who never called me back.
We were stranded outside the hotel with all of our belongings inside and no way to get in for an hour and they offered us no compensation (aside from a cup of coffee) nor an apology. I'm super disappointed and will be staying at the Thatcher hotel next time. Such a shame because on our walk back from breakfast my husband and I were talking about how we wanted to make trips to Hopland a reoccurring adventure.
UPDATE: They finally called and made it right. We are looking forward to going back out there again and enjoying the hotel and town (without...
Read moreI have meant to write a review for YEARS, and now it seems reviews are tied to rooms now that the Stock Farm monicker has replaced Campovida, so caveat…I live way to close to stay here, my review is for the restaurant only. Have never had a shaky experience here, even when we diverted my parents away from The Broiler (come on Boomer…)and made them go here. Ingredients are always fresh and wonderfully prepared. The pizza os always excellent and we have had them all (please bring back the peachy pig next year- LOVED that one). The fire roasted veggie platter, we get it every time….and the beer always ice cold and well selected. That said, even with excellent food all the time, the one constant through all the changes and all the years is the fellow that greeted us the first time we walked through the door with “Hey folks, what can I get you?” We eat out a lot…and stopped during the plague. Locked inside we asked each other what do we miss? Marty. Hands down. Best server we have ever dined with. The guy is amazing. It is totally worth it to eat here and see what really good at your job looks like. Went Sunday, need to go back every Sunday....
