October 2023 - Deciding to get off the highway to take the scenic route to Grand Lake, we saw a place to put some fuel in the truck we rented and pulled over. There was a good sized wood building on the lot called "The Chicken Coop"and we weren't sure if they sold food or convenience store type items. We'd been looking for a place to eat and my partner thought he smelled fried chicken so we went inside. What a nice surprise. It was a big bustling diner with lots of tables, chairs, booths and plenty of customers.
We grabbed a booth and were brought paper placemats, flatware and menus. Coffee? Yes! Serving both breakfast and lunch the menus offer a lot of choices. At 11:30 AM, we were definitely in breakfast mode. I suggested to my partner that he try some of the tasty items commonly eaten in Oklahoma, so he ordered the small plate of freshly made biscuits with sausage gravy, a side of sausage patties and one pancake. I asked, one pancake? He said, that's what the menu listed. We could see why! We had to laugh. It was so large. Perfect, though, with it's rise, color, airiness, flavor and consistency. The sausage here in Oklahoma we noticed has a much finer quality to it. Very smooth, pure and lean. Still nicely flavored but with no visible grease or fat.
Going with an old favorite, I had the ham and cheese omelette that came with hash browns and toast. The omelette was cooked properly - not overdone and scorched and not underdone and runny. Good ham in small cubes and melted cheddar. Grated hash browns were crispy and light. Our waitress brought me a small container of their natural homemade strawberry jam for my marble rye toast. We couldn't finish our plates but boxed up anything left.
Fried chicken lovers, there was no way we were leaving without some to go to eat later, when this is obviously the kind of place you know is going to make the real fried chicken people used to eat whether out or made at home. Restraining ourselves from getting more, we each got a thigh to go. Eating it soon after arriving at our Inn, it was as scrumptious as we knew it would be. If we lived around here, this would be a regular item we'd pick up to go. Even though I don't know how many other choices there are for food of this kind in the south Grand Lake area, there really doesn't need to be one since "The Chicken Coop" is so ideal, unless it's later in the day. For locals, this is the perfect place to settle in and enjoy a finely cooked meal. No alcohol is served here. Kids menu: 2 chicken legs, tenders, grilled cheese and PBJ sandwich with choice of side @ $4.25. Salads. Open 7:00AM - 2:00PM five days a week. Closed Wednesdays...
Read moreI am discovering some excellent mom and pop cafés / restaurants around the Grand Lake area. This is one!
Chicken is their name, but the menu covers everything you would expect in a small-town diner. Breakfast was our meal of choice today. They lay a plate of breakfast goodness on the table here! My usual again today, check the pictures. Everything cooked perfectly as ordered. The honorable mention awards on the plate go to the bacon and the gravy. The bacon cooked crisp, the way I like it. Not for everyone’s taste; it works for me. This was crisp bacon, country smoke house thick cut. Sturdy and crisp enough that I could use it as a knife cut the eggs up. Or maybe even use it to butter toast. Yeah, I liked it. The gravy appears to be real, homemade. If it was a mix, then the cook gave it some extra love with sausage drippings. It was good.
A big clean restaurant, Excellent friendly service. Easy access.
Today’s Café table top advertisement winner is Larry’s Body Works. Not an especially creative or catchy ad, but I liked the picture of...
