This is a tricky review to write. There is a lot about this place that is really great - the food, and a lot about it that needs a good deal of work - nearly everything else. I was told in passing that this place was "new," so I was expecting some new restaurant glitches. This is a tiny establishment, I think there were 8 tables. We took the one 4 top that was open. There were 4 of us, but only 3 chairs. We asked a hustling staff member in a Robin Hood hat (for some reason, they all wear hats) about another chair. He said they were all taken, leaving us with the "bathroom or the floor." Okay, I wasn't expecting that, but heard it again later on, so it must be a standard line. Fortunately, it wasn't long until someone left and we could abscond with a chair. The menu was interesting. There were the usual suspects, pep but there were some nice new ideas, a "chicken dinner", prosciutto with oregano flowers, cheeseburger, etc. My brother and his wife ordered a salad to start and the four of us decided to give the "Winner Winner Chicken Dinner" and the Vannoy prosciutto pizza a try, although I've never known Vannoy to advertise prosciutto. So we waited....... and waited. After about 15 min., someone finally came by to take drink orders. We figured that we better place food orders while we had her. Then we waited.......and waited, expecting at least the salad to show up. While we waited, one of the servers came barreling through the front door with a grocery cart full of bags of ice. I had the sinking feeling that this place definitely wasn't over the new restaurant glitches. As I watched, I noticed that the dough here is not hand tossed, it's rolled with a pin. So we waited.....and waited. About 40 min. or more after our order, the salad arrived, shortly followed by the pizza. The chicken pizza boasted an herb sauce, chicken, arugula, cheese and a balsamic reduction drizzle. The arugula looked highly suspicious. My astute SIL immediately noticed the lack of balsamic, which was the real reason we ordered that particular pie. We finally caught Robin Hood, who was very apologetic. He quickly came out with a tiny (I think 2 tablespoons would be a very generous estimate) dose of the reduction, which he ceremoniously drizzled over the pizza. He told us that they use such a small amount because it's so expensive. I started with the prosciutto. It also had the herb sauce, and a barely decent supply of Vannoy's thinly sliced country ham. The sauce was garlicky and delicious, the crust was perfectly crispy. The oregano flowers came as tiny bits of completely charred flowers sprinkled over the other ingredients. I still can't figure out why they're even there, except that it sounds good on the menu. It was time to try the chicken pie. I took one bite.......the reason that the arugula looked suspicious was because it was basil. I kinda hated to mention it to Robin Hood, as he was so distraught about the reduction. It was a very good pizza, I like basil, so it wasn't a real issue. It needed more balsamic, which none of us thought that it had actually been reduced. While I do understand the price of balsamic, a couple of tablespoons on a 16 in. pizza, just isn't enough. At $16 for the pie, I think they could have spared more. We went back a few days later and opted for take-out, hoping to eat more quickly. We wanted another specialty pizza, but they didn't have half of the ingredients (it wasn't even 5:00 yet), so we asked for the same two. We were asked if spinach was okay on the chicken as they were out of arugula. I asked for basil instead, and was told that they "couldn't get it." Frankly, I don't get why they don't shape up on their service, equipment, and ingredient supplies. It turns out that I'd forgotten the Carolina philosophy that if you haven't been there for at least 5 generations, you're still "new." I found out that they've been there sine 2011! It's been long enough for them to get it together. That being said, they still make really good pizza, you just need to...
Read moreSince visiting this area of North Carolina we have had continuous suggestions to visit this establishment for their pizza pie. Well, we finally visited and found out you cannot order a pizza to go, you must eat in at a table. Good luck getting a table because there are only approximately 7 tables in this small location. My husband waited and scouted out a table once some patrons were finished. Once finally seated we did notice that others were able to come in and place an order and then came back to get it. We figured the people had to have been locals and the exceptions were because of that. Well, the pizza was ordered and finally after all the hype we would finally taste what has been called "amazing and like no other" pizza. I order an extra cheese pizza and my family orders some other types which one included potatoes on it. I don't eat meat so I was excited to get the cheese pizza. WELL....there was barely any cheese on the pizza and the flavor was just okay. I have had better pizza and would not wait as long as I did for that pizza again. I have had way better pizza. The establishment is tight, our waitress was very accommodating, and other patrons just stared at us while we ate. Not sure if the stares came because we were outsiders or because we had an adorable baby with us. All the same it was a little uncomfortable. When we exited people did come up to us to ask where we were from, so you...
Read moreAfter reading the reviews I was going to eat there during my four days recently. Not open Monday or Tuesday left me just Wednesday. OK, so at precisely 3:30, I walked in Pie In The Sky, and shortly was greeted. I requested mushrooms and Italian sausage. “Nope, out of both, we’ll have some tomorrow.” At that point, I had to decide again , as I thought any pizzeria would have these basic ingredients. Then it felt like I was keeping the lady waiting. She did apologize. I said no problem I ordered the ham and tomato’s. Come back in 25 minutes I was told. I walked around the beautiful park below, spotting fly fisherman and strollers. Back in 25 minutes, I was handed my pizza and left. They may make a good pizza, but it felt more like I was in Brooklyn, not the mountains. The crust was thick and delicious. The toppings, well, there just wasn’t a lot of them. I got the largest pizza and it was $23. That plus a $3 tip, just didn’t see worth that much. I really wanted to love this pizza. At best, we are just...
