I left a star because I had to in order to leave a review. I traveled all the way from Pennsylvania and now that my daughter is older I want to introduce her to places I used to visit when I lived in the island. We ask for samples and we were told that the owner doesn’t offer any samples since the pandemic, unbelievable!!!, right is an ice cream parlor. Never mind is a unique ice cream parlor were they make unusual flavors. I remember visiting this place as a teenager and enjoying tasting the different flavors. What a shame. My kids ended it up getting regular flavors which they loved but my husband and I were so disappointed that we traveled all this way that we just wanted to leave and didn’t get anything. Even the employees were ashamed to tell us that they no longer offer samples.

What does the pandemic have to do with offering samples? a sample should be in disposable spoon, right!

Sadly I will never visit this place again nor recommend to any of my friends and I will share this experience with as many...

Have been going here for years and bringing friends when they visit PR. Took some friends from the states here last week and the rude girl at the counter told me that they could no longer have samples to taste the different flavors. I asked her why they had the small tasting spoons and she rudely told me that they were the spoons you got when you purchased your ice cream. I walked out and went to Heladería El Grito just a couple of buildings down and the girl there was super nice and allowed two samples per customer! The flavors were awesome and the mood much better! I talked to a local while in El Grito and she told me the same thing, that she used to go to the original, but something had changed, including the tasting of different flavors not being allowed anymore and that she was also never going back. Check out El Grito and try the corn, passion fruit, coco, heck…...

It was not a good experience. Five women working in the place, talking to each other, not so friendly. I asked to try one icecream flavor because they are rare, exotic flavors of different fruits and food like pumpkin and sweet potato. The lady said no, that they dont let anyone taste the flavors. I bought three small, two flavored icecreams for almost $15.00. One of them was like gooye, stickey texture that never melted. The sweet rice was like sticky, horrible. We just threw it away. We'll never return. We've been before when the owner was alive and their ice creams tasted better. We even took a video of the icecream that...

It had been years since my last visit, and wow.....Heladería Lares is still a must stop destination!!! I tried some of their most unique flavors, including rice with sausage, rice with beans, and rice with pigeon peas and cilantro. Yes, you read that right....and they were surprisingly good! I also sampled their tembleque, coconut, coquito, sweet potato, and dulce de leche flavors. Every scoop was packed with flavor and creativity. If you're in the area, this place is absolutely worth the trip!!!!

Felt the girls behind the counter didn't want to help us Americans that didn't speak Spanish so I looked up the flavor names on my phone and when we asked for samples before trying one of them helped and said the flavor in English which confused us. However, the flavor options are outstanding from garlic to chicken and rice to too many tropical fruits to mention. I am an adventurous eater and had rice and beans before so tried maize with cinnamon and a scoop of parcha which were both delicious.

This is the original Lares ice cream shop. Renowned for it’s weird and exotic favors like rice and bean favored ice cream, it’s a must stop for you if your in Lares. It’s been open since before my time. I’ve been going here since childhood. They no longer give out free samples to test taste like other local shops but it’s history begs for your loyalty. The shop is like a tiny museum dedicated to its history. Try something different here you just might have a new favorite favor!
