The food was good, as one would expect with all of that fresh seafood near by. I appreciate they are one of a small amount of restaurants in the area, however, the service and management really need some attention. I was there over Labor Day weekend, stopped in on consecutive nights and bought enough food for six people.
The first night - The waitresses seemed over whelmed. I am not sure what they were required to do in the kitchen, but aside from our six there were only two at a table in the restaurant, well below capacity. They would often walk passed the table without checking on us for a water refill or to give us some additional napkins. One couple at our table asked for a 2nd order of the pan-seared scallops which ended up taking over 30 minutes for an item that is normally 5. They apologized and said this is the busiest weekend of the year. We also initially asked to sit outside, were told no but then found out they put a table outside for another guest.
The second night - We placed an order for pickup, again for six people. We tried calling a couple times, however, nobody picked up. So we drove over and placed our order with the waitress. She took it without issue and told us it would be 30 minutes...we ran over to the general store and were hanging out waiting playing some darts. she acknowledged us multiple times, after 30 minutes she says the kitchen is backed up and it would be 15 more minutes. After 20 minutes, I am trying to get their attention so i could pay for it before we got the food. At that time the food was being bagged to come out, except that is the time when we are notified that 3 of the items we ordered were not made and the restaurant ran out. She offered to have the chef cook additional items but we would have to wait. Which was really annoying.
The chef must have known when the ticket came in that the restaurant did not have item X, Y and Z. Whether he told the waitress or not, i am not sure but once someone knew the items we ordered were not in inventory we should have been offered the option to order something else.
because of the delays we experienced the night before we knew it made zero sense to add on at that point, so 3 people did not get the dinner they ordered.
Is this a management screw up? They obviously did not have adequate staffing on site; did they not have enough food for the busiest weekend of the year?
why did it take the cook 30 minutes to cook five scallops?
why didnt the front of house talk to customers to make sure they understood proper wait times and let them know items from the menu were 86'd?
All in all it just came across as mistakes that could have been preventable and handled better if people just...
Read moreI’ve been living in south jersey my whole life and restaurants like Bull on the Barn definitely make our little rural area into something special!
Bull on the barn is located In Lawrence. A middle of the nowhere type of town that is near the bay. Since being near the water, the air is still breezy and cool even on the really hot days. This adds to the restaurants very unique atmosphere and makes it a very comforting place to be at. It’s very BYOB in a very good way. You enter and you can pick a seat at whatever is open. Every table, seat or booth is different and only adds character(I wonder if there is seating up those steps). Only adds more reason to come back again and again. Treat yourself and bring your favorite beer and enjoy some of the finest seafood in the area!
Atmosphere aside, how is their food? Simply put, it’s some of the best seafood I’ve ever had. Chain restaurants can’t compete and after eating here you may finding yourself questioning that fancy seafood restaurant you frequent, asking yourself “how come they never taste this good?” For starters my table got the fried clam strips, oysters Rockefeller, and clams casino. I grew up a very picky eater, who spent time over the last years trying new things. These mussels were a very delicious and rewarding experience(I forgot to take pictures, guess I have to go back and take some. Oh well). For my entree I got the fried flounder with French fries on the side, classic fish and chips. My lovely date got linguine in crab sauce. That fish changed my life and paired with their tar tar sauce, it will be hard not making this a Sunday routine. The pasta dish was very flavorful, the linguine was cooked to Al dente perfection and the lump crab meat was very fresh. I can’t wait to go back and I can’t wait to show my friends and family!
I was also reading negative comments regarding the service. My personal opinion is that I’m grateful for places like Bull on the Barn to still existed after the pandemic. Through economic uncertainties and peoples lives being thrown around these past few years I really don’t care if my drink comes a little late or if the kitchen gets busy. The quality of food and attitude from the workers there will keep me coming back for years. Small businesses like these are what make America so great to begin with and it’s important we support them. Thank you Bull on the Barn for the very pleasant experience. I...
Read moreThis place was a diamond in the middle of nowhere. The food was fantastic. ( This review was from 3 years ago. We went there again last year and the place totally changed. The food all tasted like it came Frozen and pre-packaged from BJ's or Costco's... Nothing tasted homemade, wonderful or special. The service had a lot to be desired in every aspect. Not only that the price is jumped up quite a bit. But just the same the place was very busy, so I don't think they will to go back to their old wonderful ways. I wish they would, because I loved this place. Now you can finish reading my old review from 3 years ago). The prices were ridiculously reasonable. The ambiance was incredible very cool and interesting antiques everywhere you look. I believe most of for sale as well as the viewing pleasure. It was like the owners dream was to create something magical out of nothing out of an barn in the middle of field, close to what seems to be the main house was its side driveway. Down the driveway was a barn and on the side of the barn was a big black bull. We checked out at the menu online and it sounded perfect. I love Seafood and chocolate mousse!! The ambulance and Anastasia is amazing. Our waitresses Jackie was wonderful as well. I would definitely recommend this wonderful restaurant to anybody that likes really good seafood food, especially if they like Seafood. But must appreciate an amazing beachy nostalgic atmosphere. l really appreciate the place for all that it is. I will definitely go back for another...
