Been once, loved it. Made a reservation through the text line and they were very quick to respond. When we arrived the buzz in was really quick. I was a little confused by the different door numbers outside (I'm short and didn't see the actual call button for a second). It's probably about 15 shallow stairs straight up, so if you aren't great at stairs maybe have someone behind you. The inside is extremely dark, but eyes adjust quickly... Unless you are in one of the back tables. I don't know if you can request to sit in another part, but closer to the bar is a lot brighter. When seated the hostess/waitress explained the menu (first time) and gave us plenty of time to look over it. It was difficult to read the menu... Mainly because we thought it was more fun to use the candle at the table, but plenty of people were using lights on phones to read, so don't let the dark menu reading freak you out. When our order was taken the drinks were out very quickly after. We went at 6 and were one of three tables, so this speed might have just been lack of tables. The drinks were amazing, I would highly recommend THE PIRATE, especially if you have no idea what the words on the menu mean. It's more of a "normal" drink if that's more your speed. Wait staff was extremely attentive; our waitress was over every 10ish minutes, not in an overbearing way, just a quick check for more drinks. We also had other staff members come by and refill our water glasses while making light conversation. Ordered a second round of drinks, still quick. Tasted just a little different than the first round (basically swapped the drink of the other person I was with), but was still amazing. Checked out/paid at the table, we took the entire 2 hours. I'm not sure if they would have asked us to leave or anything like that (the text reservation says it's 2 hours). It started getting really loud at 8, so I would suggest a 6pm reservation if you prefer to do a quieter environment. Exit out the back, still 15 stairs straight down, but larger steps. All of it was ana amazing experience. Can't...
Read moreI am not a fan of "scene places" or as some people call them "hipster hangouts". But this place is pretty cool and I was extremely and pleasantly surprised. As someone who turns my nose up at fancier bars and is accustomed to smoke filled hole in the walls, this was a welcome change. The staff is extremely knowledgeable on the cocktails they serve here and the owner was a blast to have a conversation with and discuss the cocktails and what not. That's right, cocktails, not drinks folks, some of these are works of art. The Kansas City was by far my favorite, if you like bourbon and you like BBQ you will be in boozy heaven. It literally can only be described as drinking a couple of slow smoked ribs right off of the smoker. It seriously had me gasping for air and adjectives after my first sip, my friends thought I was slipping into a joy filled coma. It was like the Greek god Dionysus and Doc Holiday personally made us a round of cocktails and as they served them winked and said, "Welcome to the Valhalla of Alcohol." Several of their cocktails are infused with actual cigar smoke and the actual "work" that goes into what they do there is amazing to see. You have to have a reservation and it's more of a place to enjoy some drinks rather than go out and party or cut loose. The price is pretty up there price wise as far as just cocktails go, (think in between PNL and The Plaza, maybe $50 for a round of four) but for the product you receive it's extremely worth it to try at least once. I'm in love and highly recommend this to any fan of a nicely crafted cocktail or a casual swill drinker like myself who occasionally likes to spend a little more $ and be amazed. Hats...
Read moreStaff was friendly and provided good service. The place has a nice atmosphere and decor. I really like the idea.
Unfortunately when we were there it was terribly loud. It's a bar the size of most people's living room and they had about 25-30 people in there, which is capacity. So while it's called a speakeasy, there wasn't a single person speaking easy in there. I've been there in the past and it was a quiet, romantic setting. We might as well have gone to a sports bar. Due to the ceiling and wall finishings there is very little to dampen the sound. It's all hard surfaces. I'm sure that's tough to manage from the bar's perspective. -1
Ordered the strawberry drink and it was so bitter that you couldn't drink it. You got a very brief, muted flavor of strawberry gin followed by 8 seconds of vanilla extract + kind of a bitter orange peel/artificial flavor. I suspect the bartender used a teaspoon of vanilla cake bitters instead of a drop or two. -1
Also ordered the Don Draper which is a whiskey with a splash of frangelico, orange and cherry and other things. It's basically an old fashioned, which I typically enjoy. I was reminded of what frangelico is by ordering this drink (a hazelnut liqueur) and how it overpowers anything you put it in. No stars deducted here. You could tell it was well made, it just was not my cup of tea. Fair enough.
The menu they give you only has their house cocktails. If you go, and you're not feeling like ordering something with 6 ingredients in it, you should see if they will just serve you a nice...
