Normally I don’t give one star reviews but this is a place to be avoided at all costs. We were there well over an hour before we got our food when only two tables were really waiting. I could tell we came in after a rush but it was 2:30-3:30 for our meal. The cheese sticks came about 40 minutes in and were barely warm on the inside, but the pickle chips were actually pretty good. We ordered two salads and a cheeseburger. The burger (bun and meat) were burnt to a fine char. The salads had poorly chopped lettuce, included the bottoms of the heads and the “seasoned ground beef” for the taco salad was clearly just a chopped up burger patty.
None of us could even finish the food it was that bad.
Also the poor waitress was completely run ragged. She was all alone and struggling to keep up.
If visiting the area like we were - stay away. It looks like it’s a place where the locals gather for pie and a conversation which is probably great - but not what we came for nor what...
Read moreIt's just not the same as when I was a kid. The decor is rather trite and derivative. Nothing unique or particularly eye-catching.
I really don't know how to describe the food. Is uninspired Sysco meaningful?
I ordered a reuben. What I got was a Thousand Island dressing and sour kraut on rye with a slight pastrami garnish. The sandwich must have had more than a 1/4 cup of dressing. The fries were cooked to a faint yellow.
My wife ordered the bison burger medium rare. It was cooked pretty thoroughly. I realize that bison is a very lean meat, but that burger was DRY. How do you make a ground meat tough?
West Liberty has reimagined itself into a quaint tourist destination. As the only real dining establishment in the village, it would benefit the Gathering Place to up their game to a more memorable dining experience.
If you visit West Liberty and are hungry, it's worth the drive to go to Urbana or...
Read moreThe place is quiet and clean. There was only one staff member on the floor that I could see who seemed to be the hostess and server. She did a wonderful job. I assume they had other staff to help her if needed but the place seems to be a mom and papa kind of restaurant. Place where the restaurant is located seems to be a small town so it is understandable that you don’t need so many people working all the time.
With that being said the food was good if you like unseasoned food but they do have salt and pepper on the table to give your food some seasoning taste and sometimes that is all you need. But the food was juicy and not burnt so that is good. The one dish or should I say appetizers I would recommend is the fried mushrooms if you like crunchy outside and a juicy soft inside that just burst in your mouth when you bite down then...
