Central Maine customers to Gammy's will find it sort of a combination of Governor's and Big G's.
Located in Linneus, 6 miles south of Houlton, Maine, and surrounded by potato fields, Grammy's has a full menu, large portions, and tuned-in staff. At my recent, first-time visit to Grammy's with 3 teenagers and 2 nearly retirees, all were very happy with our visit.
We came for lunch and were immediately behind 10 people plus a group of 14 and a busload of Skowhegan High School Jazz performers (State Jazz Festival was in Houlton that weekend). So we had a wait.
Once seated, the service was all anyone would expect in a successful restaurant.
The food is as reviewed by others ... huge portions at a relatively small price. Good selection of traditional fare ... salads, pastas, chicken, steak and lots of seafood, mostly fried with a nice light batter. Breakfast served all day. Their famous selection is Seafood Platter.
I had iced tea. It was promptly served and was fresh-brewed, with a slice of lemon. Refill was free.
My lunch was a steak and cheese sub. It comes with home-cut fries, but I opted for onion rings. The waitress asked if I wanted frozen, or they would make fresh. I went "Duh! Fresh please!". ;-)
The food we ordered arrived in a very reasonable time, and in the order and timing expected. Everyone was very satisfied. Everyone ... and I mean everyone that left the restaurant while I was there ... had a left-over carryout.
My plate was a huge platter. There was a six-inch sub on it, but you couldn't tell, for the plate was heaped full with onion rings. Wonderful onion rings. Best I've had in years. My adult friends "helped me" with several rings, but I still didn't finish them all. The potato fries seen on nearby platters ... it would be a disservice to call them french fries ... were also plentiful and excellent by all reports (sweet potato fries were also available).
The remainder of the onion rings and the excellent steak and cheese sub were my dinner several hours later. No gristle, not fatty ... maybe a tad salty, but excellent, with a perfect amount of nicely cooked onion, green pepper, cheese and mushroom, as suggested by the waitress.
The elders of our party skipped dessert, but the teenagers enjoyed an on-the-house pastry given to them due to our wait to get seated, and took out whoopie pies perhaps 6" across, and with even more and better filling than the famous Big G's whoopie pies.
Grammy's was much more than I expected. Highly recommended. 6am-8pm,...
Read moreI'm not sure where to start on this review; there are a bunch of things to be addressed.
First, Grammy's Country Inn has variety of ways to be listed/found, especially in real life when you are in the area. It's also listed as Grammie's Restaurant and Grandma's Inn. The location of the restaurant itself is tucked away in what seems to be between two farms and looks almost like a house with a big lit up sign on the top.
One thing that is consistent and true is that the portions are HUGE. I ordered a cheeseburger with onion rings and immediately, I knew there was no way I would be able to finish this meal in less than three sittings. The whoopie pie I purchased was not as big a head or a basketball, but rather an overgrown softball.
I was with two other people; one chose a hamburger with straight fries; one chose a grilled cheese with curly fries. What we all agreed on is that the food was rather bland and greasy, and should not be used for a flavor benchmark for anything.
The menu is an extensive five pages and many, many things listed are fried.
I think this is a favorite with the locals since the portions are so huge at a comparatively low price. It also seems to be on/near a snow sled trail; one of the dining rooms was completely full of snow sledders.
The decor is really, really rustic and really reminds me of a mix between a country restaurant and a diner. The servers were friendly and didn't seem to rush us at all. Cash and credit cards were accepted and parking wasn't a problem at all.
For me, one visit really was enough. It was novel because of the portion sizes, but the food didn't warrant a...

Many years ago I spent some wintering hibernation in Maine while working on the LP expansion and we would come to Grammy's for dinner. It's a small place and sometimes you wonder how they haven't expanded because this food is so darn good. There is absolutely NO substitution for a fresh hot meal when it's -26* outside and dark.
I may be 3200 miles away on the west coast at home but I remember a clearly as if it was yesterday how great the food was. You would get more than you expected and more than you could eat. A $9 meal was not a $9 meal, it was two meals that were $4.50 each.
I remember the waitress that would usually help us out, she was so nice and when you are so far away from home it's nice to see somebody smile and treat you like you are family about to belly up to your own Grandmothers table.
Looking forward to going back, some day I'll be on the east coast again and I will make a point to go here because I need another t-shirt because my wife stole my...
