First enjoyed the experience that is Tucker’s BBQ when—as a student at Mercer and an RA in the dorm—I would take a break from the grind of studying, announce I was taking a run, and load the car with hungry souls. We would enter to find the place buzzing—even at close to midnight—with the sound of the jukebox and the sight of founder Mr. Monroe Tucker “standing post” at one end of the serving counter (and Mr. Huglett at the other end). Ten AM ‘til 2AM, wide open, seven days a week! My “go to” order was a BBQ plate with home-cut fries and a large sweet tea. And though the vinegar based sauce first got me hooked, it was the flavor of the authentic, welcoming atmosphere at Tucker’s that kept me coming back. All these years later, it still does. I live a hundred miles away, yet, at the drop of a hat, I can still “find an excuse” to make the drive to Macon, enter the door, and find Tommy Joe “standing post” at the end of the serving counter, where he he is ever-ready with a smile and a greeting. Yet, it isn’t mere nostalgia that keeps me coming back. Mr. Monroe Tucker returned from the Second World War, had a knack for smoking pork, opened his restaurant in 1947, and—to this day—it serves some of the best I’ve ever had. His legacy is still intact. And on this Memorial Day in 2019, I pause to remember one who followed his dream and left so many of us wanting more...

Read moreTucker's BBQ has been in Macon Georgia since some time in the forties. They serve pulled pork BBQ, Brunswick stew, and homemade french fries. Of course they also have the regular Staples of hamburgers Etc. The service is friendly and personable. The barbecue is one of the top two in Macon - a toss-up between Fincher's and Tuckers. They're only open for lunch. They do not serve dinner. They also only accept cash and checks. They do not accept plastic of any kind. But they probably have the best sweet tea in Macon Georgia. Go there try them out, you'll...
