I was not here for food but instead a crisis: As I was riding my motorcycle to work in DC, a motorist rear-ended me and fled the scene. My motorcycle Was incapacitated from the incident and I was only able to slowly ride off (15 mph with no capability of acceleration on throttling) to the first exit onto Old Brandywine Road West and then into the parking lot of the deli to seek assistance from my insurance company and local authorities. Well, I was in the parking lot with my motorbike and that lot is very busy and next to a very busy road. The best I could do is safely stop the motorbike and get off so i wouldn't get hit. I was in between two spots horizontally as I did and feared constantly I would be stuck by dumptrucks and semis grabbing lunch in this small lot. As I waited in the baking hot sun with my gear on and was being constantly hit on by male patrons entering the facility, I decided to call my mother to come pick me up to head home since the tow truck wouldn't be there for 90 minutes. Next, go inside to leave my key with the manager. Well the inside is tiny because it is a converted bungalow house: two tables and then the counter when you walk in the door. The staff is bilingual which is great but they were not attentive that I was standing there for a few minutes. Granted they were serving a customer when I walked up but they were done quickly with him and often looked at me and had conversations in Spanish amongst themselves instead of greeting me when I stood at the counter. I understood everything they said: they were talking about some orders and also very badly about a phone customer. Once I grabbed their attention to explain my situation and leave the key which has my first name on the keychain, the lady who helped me was very kind as I spoke Spanglish to her so she'd me understand better. Out the door I went and waited. Well it turned out the tow truck arrived before my mother did so I needed the key back. I went back inside and before I did I refreshed myself on the phrase "My name is Kendra, I need my key please. Thank you" in Spanish to ensure I remembered how to say it properly. The gentleman who finally answered my fifty "excuse mes" as he stood there staring into space was so rude to me when I got up to the empty counter. I said "Mi nombre es Kendra. Necesito mi llave por favor. Gracias." He told me in broken English he didn't understand me so I pointed at the key hanging on a hook by the cash register where the first lady had put it. He looked puzzled, asked the lady at the cash register who was there the whole time and saw it being put on the hook and she nodded. He then takes down the key almost tearing the keychain and throws it on the counter in front of the customer that was standing there paying for her order then stormed off to go back to stand where he was. I would've waited for the cashier for hand it to me after she finished. I just commented to the patron about how rude he was and said sorry as I grabbed the key and walked out...I really was not trying to disrupt anything. If anything I stood back in the little space in there that there was! I believe if I had that experience as not even a customer, I will NEVER eat there. The food looked and smelled awesome but they lost this lady biker's business. Next time I have an emergency, if ever again, I'll pull over on Route 5 itself and...
Read moreNew York Deli in Brandywine was a place that I purchased subs from when I wanted to treat myself. I would also recommend it to people who were looking for good food that was not a huge chain. Sadly, that has all ended. Not because of the food, but because of a member of the staff who has no concept of customer service or how to respectfully speak to the staff. I don't know his name, but the last two times I visited he stands behind the deli counter and is openly rude.
I preordered two subs for a 6pm pick-up. When I arrived there were several people standing in line and during the time of covid I spaced myself away from them. He waived me up to the counter and I explained that I had placed an order. As I watched people coming and going I noticed a bag of food sitting behind the counter and wondered could that be mind. I wanted to be patient, but eventually I started to walk back up to the deli counter to ask. Now there was a cashier who was handling orders and receiving payments. I never spoke with her because the deli guy called me over. However, I was watching her interactions and she seemed pleasant. As I started to walk over to the deli guy to ask about the bag, he suddenly asked the cashier what the bag of food was about. She said it was for a 6pm pick-up (me). Keep in mind that she was working with another customer when he rudely interrupted. Then he started yelling at her that I have been standing there. Now she and I never interacted, he was the one who knew I was there and never checked the bag to see what it was. The cashier was constantly working with other customers. Now there is argument in the middle of deli (him yelling at cashier ). I was given my food with no apology for the wait and as I was leaving I went up to the cashier to tell her that it was fine and don't worry. He (deli guy) started telling me to leave...you can go ... Unf**king believable.
I don't know if he is the owner, a shift manager, but after two times being spoken to inappropriately, I sadly will never go back. It is a shame that someone can ruin a business simply by their lack of control and determination to not treat people (staff and customers) with respect.
I strongly urge the general manager to train staff on appropriate behavior and if that was the manager then god...
Read moreIâm a regular at this establishment and tonightâs experience was very shocking and disappointing. The young lady who took my order was wonderful as always. My order was made incorrect, and had to be done over and she was very apologetic about it. It was close to closing time for them so everyone was moving fast. One of the preparers prepped the toasted bread for my sandwich and took it to the back to be completed. As I watched her take it to the back, I was shocked to see that she placed the bread on a metal shelf in front of the cooks. There was no paper placed beneath it⊠I continued to watch to see how long the bread would be sitting there before it was taken up by the cooks. It sat there for at least 10 mins. And in the meantime, bags were being passed to the workers for completed orders right over my bread⊠One of the workers even had a conversation with the cooks through the shelving and over my bread. I was in awe. When my sandwich was finally completed and passed to the person who took my order, I asked her why wasnât there paper placed beneath the bread and she stated that there was. I went to the owner and shared my concern and he stated that the shelf is cleaned every morning, meanwhile it was just about 7 pm. I told him about the bags being passed over my food and the conversation had over my food and his response was that he couldnât guarantee that the food being prepared was 100% sanitary. WHAT?! He told me that every restaurant, and hotel is the same way. I told him although things happen out of view, to see it is an entirely different experience. He was in defense mode the entire time. No apology, or words to even settle my concern. He actually stated that maybe he should put blinds or a curtain to block the view. I have zero complaints about the food or serving sizes here, but that to me was a total turn off , not to mention the flies around the food. This was very disappointing as a...
