This is going to be lengthy because I want to be thorough.
My boyfriend and I moved to this neighborhood in February. We have eaten here a lot of times since moving here from midtown. We have never had an experience like the one I'm about to describe. Service is always ok...food is usually good. I'd say we come about once a week- usually on Tuesdays or Wednesdays. I've read through all of these reviews and I notice the owner always replies and he legitimately seems like a nice guy who cares about his restaurants. It is a shame that his staff is running his business away.
Today we came in around 3:30-maybe 4. There were few- if any other tables seated- and only a couple of bar patrons. Our server greeted us and brought our stuff (water, tea, cheese dip, and chips) and we ordered our food. The problem began when our food came out.
My food was completely wrong, but I was going to just put it in a to go box and eat something else at home when we left-no big deal. I figured my boyfriend would eat it later. That's when he bit into his food and it was also really gross. To be specific: the cheese on our tacos was charred- to a burnt crisp. My boyfriend compared it to crunchy hashbrowns. I think it was like the crunchy topping of a casserole. Either way, it was disgusting. So we both were not going to eat more than one bite.
We get 2 nights a week off together due to work schedules and life. There is just no way we were going to waste our money on food we were not going to eat. I sure wish this was as bad as it got, but unfortunately, it got SO MUCH WORSE.
Our server was described in another review on here from Cinco de Mayo last year. I was told by a friend of mine that his name may be Jose. I do not know that to be a fact- but judging by Audrey's review from last year, he definitely sounds like the same guy.
Well, this server did not return after dropping off my to go box. We waited in case he was busy. I spotted him sitting at a table so I went to him.
I said very nicely that we probably weren't going to be able to eat our food- and that it wasn't at all the way it usually is. He cut me off in the middle of talking to ask why. I tried to explain about the cheese- to which he condescendingly explained the process of melting cheese- ok, the cheese was way past being melted- but he was not backing down from his expertise on the subject. He then shrugs his shoulders and says that "Our food is great-nobody here ever has complaints so I don't know what to tell you."
I go back to the table to tell my boyfriend what was said. A group of nurses had come in and were at a table next to us at this time. They overheard and asked me what happened. They said this was their first time eating there and couldn't believe he said that. The server comes across the restaurant at this time- in front of the nurses and my boyfriend- to tell me that if I have something to say, I need to take it up with him and not other customers. The ladies spoke up and informed him that they asked me- and one of them asked him who he was to tell anyone who they can talk to. He never once looked at my boyfriend. He only confronted the women. I doubt the nurses will return as the looks on their faces were horrified.
My boyfriend and I got up and left. The scene caused was unbelievable and stressful and something I have never experienced from restaurant staff anywhere. Everything was handled poorly. The tacos are what? $3 each? We each had 2. So- $12 was worth all of this to the server? A huge scene over $12 of food that he could have just been nice about? As a bartender, I deal with these situations all the time. First priority should always be to please the customer. NEVER ARGUE AND MAKE A SCENE.
I'm writing this review so that this server's behavior is known. Judging by the review from Audrey a year ago, this is usual behavior. There are too many other options out there to go anywhere with this type of experience and behavior. We will obviously...
Read moreThis is one of my favorite Mexican restaurants in Memphis, me and my family go frequently. Normally the service is always outstanding and the food especially. However, today for Saturday lunch me and my fiance came and was served by Jose. The people next to us were obviously his regulars/more important because they actually got a smile, responses, and refills. From the beginning he seemed to be nonchalant and everything was mediocre. When it was time to pay, Jose brought the check which came out to be $25. My fiance placed down accidentally $15 (which was supposed to be $35 - $10 tip), however we were still there and weren't leaving just yet... which should have let him know it was an accident on the sum of the money. However, when he came back realizing it wasn't right he literally THREW the money on the table and said specifically "thats not enough." and walked away, For a GOOD MINUTE thinking we were just going to leave. This truly angered me being a server as well, and also I think he believed that my fiance intentionally did that because we are an interracial couple. Upon returning and specifically waiting for him to come back my fiance felt very disrespected in front of me, and proceeded to open his wallet and count a lot of money in front of him just to give him his correct change and asked him if that was enough. Normally, being someone who works in the industry as WELL, I would never say to not tip someone, however today changed my mind. That was rudest situation I have EVER encountered in any establishment. He truly deserved his dollar tip. Again, I would never condone this because I as well am a server but this experience was truly awful. Love the food, but please express common courtesy to this server. When you go to the gas station, do you throw your money on the counter instead of putting it in the cashiers hand? He will...
Read moreThe food and service haven’t been very good the last few times I’ve gone, but the only reason I’m writing a review about it is bc one of the managers SUCKS. My husband and I stopped ordering to-go from them years ago after we asked for three paper bags of chips with our order, and the manager instead tried to make us pay for three of the family sized bags you’d buy at the grocery store. When we tried to correct the mistake, he pretended there was nothing he could do about it (despite the fact that we hadn’t paid yet), and he only changed his tune once we told him that he could just keep our entire order in that case.
Then a few weeks ago we went in with some friends on a Friday night. Service was slow, and by the time we got our food, three of our meals were cold bc they’d obviously left them sitting out while they finished making the other two. We told the server about it and how we’d like the food taken off the bill, so he went and got his manager. Lo and behold, it’s the same manager from the chip debacle. You could tell he already didn’t believe us before we’d explained anything to him bc he asked me why I’d eaten half of my enchilada if it was cold even though I’d literally only taken a single bite of it. And it’s not like he apologized or offered any other solutions like remaking our food instead, which we would’ve accepted (initially). I don’t think he had planned to make it right until someone said they’d just call and dispute the charge with their bank, at which point he told us we’d “taken things too far” and that he’d fix our checks.
Memphis has way too many good Mexican restaurants for anyone to be putting up with...
