El Gordo Real Mexican Grill — Restaurant in Mesa

You won't believe this, but this is one of those things you hear like "the hole in the wall is the best place". Outstanding food for a Mexican restaurant INSIDE A GAS STATION! If you give them grace for that, then this place is almost a 5-star lunch. PSA: unfortunately they do NOT serve Lengua.

The atmosphere is bad, but not worth getting upset over. Just do take-out. Sometimes there is an odor that anyone that's worked in restaurants may recognize. Sometimes it is something else from the building altogether. There are a few tables (maybe clean, maybe not), and the usual employee(s) are mostly friendly. Including the convenience store side which is separate.

There is another place that has better chorizo. Yet another that has better tacos, sometimes (key word). Even another place does refried beans better for Mexican "fast food". All 3 are names you'll probably recognize and no, none are Taco Bell. However, El Gordo's (yes)inconsistent but outrageously delicious and spicy salsa/sauce(s) is the real ace up their sleeve. The verde is fantastic as well and deserves its own attention. Absolutely and almost defiantly my soul wants to shout, the sauce is boss here. But they also have affordable daily specials that deserves at least 2 gambles in your life.

Mondays you can get an almost, full size bean and cheese burrito for a very good deal. I do have a conspiracy theory that they "lighten the burro's load" per se but view it more as an introductionary sample, then buy another on Tuesday. Taco Tuesday can NEVER be forgotten. It's an American thing and like apple pie and baseball, we just have to own it. So the display of love from bargains they offer is the same for tacos and I believe it's El Gordo's way of embracing the combined heritage. God bless El Gordo for being a hero and a leader in today's day and age. I commend them. Long live Taco Tuesday!

Beware, they are overcharging their food! Read below:

I went through the drive-thru today to get five rolled tacos with cheese. The menu price clearly shows five rolled tacos with cheese $5.75. there is also a menu item for $6.15 that says five rolled tacos with guacamole and cheese. I specifically ordered five rolled tacos with cheese and the lady at the speaker verified " no guacamole?" To which I replied no guacamole. Looking at my receipt I noticed they charged me $6.55 which is even higher than the menu listing at $6.15. I pointed this out to the lady at the window who told me " no it's the same thing" I said yeah but you charged me for guacamole when I didn't want guacamole and there is a menu item that costs less that says only cheese. She said again " it's the same thing. Sorry" I told her by law you have to honor the price on the menu to which she replied " sorry". At this point I was infuriated however this is not worth my time or stress so I just told her forget it I won't be coming back.

This use to be a good place years ago but has been rapidly going downhill. I went there tonight after a long day of working and sports for my kids and just wanted to grab dinner and go home. I corrected my order 3 times so I guess I should have known they wouldn't get it right. We get home and ready to eat and I open a box to a big smelly ugly fish eye staring up at me instead of two fish tacos with rice and beans AND instead of green Chile enchiladas they are red(which I could have dealt with just the wrong sauce). So instead of eating with my family I got to go back and now everyone else has eaten and everything stinks of this nasty fish my appetite is ruined. I just asked for the wrong food to be refunded since they ruined our appetites and I didn't wanna wait again for it to be done right. I was told no they wouldn't refund what they messed up.
