Don't let the sign saying "Temporarily offering takeout service only from 4-8 pm" dissuade you from patronizing this wonderful and historically significant establishment. Having lost most of their summer server and support staff, they are in the process of training some new people. However, head chef Pat is still preparing cuisine that is superb, and it may be eaten on premise as "takeout", (inside or on the patio outside) albeit on disposable dinnerware. The bar is fully open as well, with a great selection of local brews on tap, as well as top shelf cocktails (Manhattans and Old Fashioneds were excellent).
The star of the menu is fresh Lake Superior whitefish that is sourced daily from Thill's in Marquette. The spicy whitefish nuggets and whitefish cakes (95% whitefish) where a tasty set of appetizers that removed any doubt on what to order for our main entrees. That was the Whitefish Special. It was probably the best fish I have ever tried, crusted in panko crumbs and lightly pan fried, and served on a bead of cooked spinach, and topped with some light and fresh tomato salsa (no tartar sauce needed, but is available. It was just delicious, and wonderfully prepared. Highly recommended. I do plan to try the meatloaf next time, which is an old Swedish recipe that has has received acclaims for years.
Sadly, both the food and the service at Mt. Shasta have dramatically diminished since our last visit. We returned recently to have dinner on a Thursday evening, and we're very disappointed with the painfully slow serve, even though there were several servers, with each having only one or two tables of patrons. The normally delicious broiled whitefish "Shasta" was terribly overcooked and was completely dried out. It lacked any accompaniments such as melted butter or lemon wedge, and was simply plopped on top of a thin bed of equally dry hash brown potatoes.
Another in our party had the "Lodge" whitefish, which is coated in panko crumbs, and pan fried. It was missing the fresh salsa previously served with it, and had no other accompaniments other than some uncooked and undressed dry spinach leaves next to it on the plate. Each whitefish entree was $22.00, not matching the quality or quantity of the food served. Lastly, what had been a special Swiss recipe meatloaf in the past, was instead a mediocre recipe of diner quality meatloaf instead.
Someone in our group had a cheeseburger that they said was "okay", but it looked overcooked and dried out as well, with no obvious juiciness whatsoever.
I hope that somehow our experience was not representative of what Mt. Shasta currently has to offer. Otherwise, I can't imagine them continuing to stay in business...
Read moreThe food was excellent. They even have a salad bar that comes with all entrees. The service, however, was quite lacking. We were greeted and seated promptly and were looking over the menus when the server came to take drink orders. So far, so good. However, I wasn’t quite ready to order, so he went to put our drinks in. I should have ordered right then, however, because it was quite some time before he returned with our drinks and to take our food orders. While we were eating, he stopped by to refill the two out of four glasses that needed it. And, unfortunately, that was the last time we saw him voluntarily. We finished our meals and sat there, ignored, for at least 30 minutes (I was keeping track on my watch). My husband finally just went up to the bar to try to get the bill. I originally had planned to order a drink and also a dessert to go, but I was afraid we’d be sitting there for another half hour, so I said just to pay the bill and go. And there was no offer of free dessert or a small discount or anything for our patience—before or after we also had to wait an additional 15 minutes for them to fix the POS system so we could pay! We aren’t locals, just here on vacation, so we likely won’t be back, but I would go back for the food—I would just order EVERYTHING at once because we may never see the...
Read moreThe meal was delicious. Owner and waitress were nice but I have two complaints. 1. To much of their special mayo, half way through the burger it was dripping everywhere. And 2. In customer service a big no no! We were the only customers in the place and we were served our drinks then another couple came in and the waitress's attention went 100% to them. She waited on them (same as us) then we watched her go over check on them, go back and take their order, leave & give it to the cook then eventually came over and took our order! So of course the other table gets their food and we are still waiting on ours. The other table was done and gone right after we get our food to give you an idea of our wait. The place was nice, well presented and clean inside but I have to add with all the dripping from our sandwiches on the plate, tablecloth and hands I have to wonder how many previous customers spilled juice & mayo in the table cloth accidently and used their napkin to wipe it up? How many germs were growing on the tablecloth? Cause you know they dont wash each table cloth every night. Dont get me wrong thr food was delicious! But customer service, common curtisy/politeness, is a pet peeve of mine. This is why I dropped the star rating. And a half star for dripping food. (Squishying out on my face, fingers,...
