Donanelle's Bar & Grill — Restaurant in Mississippi

I read an article in a local magazine featuring a restaurant with outdoor seating, fire pit , steak cooked over in open fire and live music. The food photos were fantastic. I suggested to my friends we make the over an hour drive for a fun evening out. The only thing fantastic about this dive was the article and my friends. Upon arriving the place was packed, good sign one would think. As we exited the car and began are truck across the gravel , horribly broken sidewalk and uneven ground my friend had to hold his arm up to help us ladies get into the door. Once the door opened the staff never welcomed us or even looked at us. I approached and asked about seating. She directed us outside. The navigation.to the back door was an adventure in itself. Every inch is covered in dollar bills which is a cool concept. However, the doors are also covered making it hard to decipher the opening. Once outside there were several filthy old wooden picnic tables. We picked our own spot and kept an open mind. After about ten minutes a waitress approached and took our order for appetizers and drinks. We ordered chicken wings and egg rolls. The wings were cooked well and tasted good. Egg rolls under cooked. This is where anything good ends. Another 35 minutes later our waitress with an attitude took our order. All six of us ordered rare and medium rare steaks. One hour and 25 minutes late went inside to ask about our order. The cook stated he was just now putting it on the grill. Keep in mind by this time the place had cleared out except for drinkers.when my friend told him how long we wait he was rude and loudly and rudely barked Something to the effect take it or leave it ! Almost another hour later we get our food. Potatoes were cold with a huge hunk of ice cold butter, a foil pack of sour cream and hard in the middle. The steaks were thin, cold, doused, in some kind of marinade. It tasted like old liquid smoke. Over half of the steak was fat. Needless to say my dog enjoyed it. The waitresses in the staff were extremely rude. Even though I read this article and saw these photos of this fantastic food, I almost canceled after reading your other. There were so many people that had experiences exactly like me. However, I decided to make that judgment for myself. I can honestly say there are six residents of Mississippi who will never return. We did have a really great night out as we laughed so hard about this restaurant. As we were leaving, we looked into the kitchen which was absolutely filthy. The Cook had the same rag, cutting meat wiping his hands throwing it on the butcher block where he was preparing food. Not a disposable glove in the house. As for paying for our meal, good luck with that. You have to find a waitress that even feels like speaking to you. If you make it through that step, he will be directed to the back door. As I was waiting for my friend to pay, I looked over and saw a waitress drinking a beer. I was so glad I did not...

I came with friends that had eaten there before. Supposedly a great place to eat. Place was rundown, nasty looking. Waitresses unkempt. We were the 1st ones there. Orders were taken. They had catfish basket on the childrens menu, tried to order it because only other catfish on the menu was in the middle of a lettuce sandwich. I prefer crispy when fried. I was told I could not order from children's menu although was same price as the as fish sandwich. I asked that the catfish not be put in the sandwich, but bread on the side with catsup. Rest of friends orders were taken. Each person's food was brought out at different times so that everyone ate their meal before the others got theirs. My meal didn't arrive. Waitress came out and said problem with fryer it would be a little while. Even though my sisters food which was fried and delivered, when she told me mine would be delayed. Everyone had finished their meal but one,, he was having difficulty eating the ribs, I know God gave us teeth but really. . I just asked for mine to go because everyone else had finished. People were waiting for tables in a wet outside dining area, which they were forgotten also. People walking out because drinks were served but meal was forgotten. Had to ask for it. Very unorganized, poor service. Except for one meal at our table, was poor. Ribs were so tough, couldn't eat it. Baked potatoes hard and barely cooked. When paying for the meal we noticed prices were higher than stated on menu, waitress stated, it was an old menu. Place was packed but for the life of me, I don't know why. I will never eat there again. For the price was not worth it. When I got back to hotel and opened my bag, I had a soggy, greasy fish filet buried under just lettuce, no tomato, no ketchup for $14.99 and 3 soggy onion rings that i was...

This is a very special place. If you happen upon it, unknowingly, as I did, traveling along Hwy 49, and the neon sign lit up like something from Boogie Nights, catches your attention, stating simply... You Can't Beat My Meat; Well, you would probably be intrigued, with the right disposition and love quirky things. Parking is "get in where you fit in", and the plain, drab, old rustic cabin exterior do not prepare you for the Rabbit Hole you are entering. Every inch of the walls are plastered in Promissory Notes, of different denominations, and cool Halloween-ish decor. There are tables all around, with people eating and chatting, and like-wise at the bar, where your average selection of cold bottles brews call to you, enticing you to sit down and listen to an eclectic mix of intelligent conversation, as you peruse the very minimal, extremely simplistic menu. The limited selection seems arbitrary at first glance, but when you try almost everything on the menu, as I have over the months since my first visit, you will understand that they have Mastered a specific range of smoke, spices, and VERY FIERY rubs, that will light you on fire, but in a sinfully delicious way! Ribs From Hell, Wings From Hell (bring antacids) Will scorch you in a creatively sadistic manner, and the STEAKS!!!! The Rib Plates...... Whether you are a local who hasn't been here, or a traveler passing through, if you see that neon sign, boasting that Unbeatable Meat, do yourself a favor, and give it your best shot. You won't be disappointed. And if you are... well.... you may just be a snobby...
