Based on a recommendation from a kind staff member at nearby Stanton Hall, we stopped by Mammy's Cupboard while passing through Natchez. Being particularly partial to pie, it didn't take much to convince me to stop. Once there, the bright and cheery owner ushered us in and immediately made us feel welcome.
From start to finish, our experience was both fun and funny. The owner chatted with us almost every time he walked by our table, whether to joke with us, show us what a certain menu item was as he carried it to another table, to talk about the area, our travels, etc.
We settled on the roast beef sandwich and the reuben. As we began enjoying each, quite extensively, we were further surprised to learn that all the sandwich breads were made fresh in-house. The quality and taste of the sandwiches was excellent! Better yet, each came with a small bowl of vegetable soup and potato salad. The soup was very flavorful and hearty!
To top it off, we had to go for some of that "mile high pie," so we ordered a slice of coconut cream and chocolate cream. Wow! Talk about mile high! The meringue was in defiance of the laws of physics! Needless to say, both pies were delectable. We were ashamed to leave a little behind, as we were stuffed to the rafters.
Overall, not only was the food excellent, but the owner's attitude and friendliness made for such a wonderful experience. It was a delight to see him sweep through the room engaging and charming everyone with ease.
Thank you for your hard work and devotion to...
Read moreDropped in after 60yrs of life. I've passed this monument of history for a lifetime. Every time I occasioned to be in Natchez, MS, which isn't often, I pass this place. Today I stopped and actually had the best time. It was almost closing time, but they practically pulled out the red carpet for me after they heard my back story of 60 yrs. Just the nicest people & the food--Omg! Everything is homemade. I purchased lunch to go, but was given several free desserts to be able to taste the love in the cooking later at my hotel. I was also treated to their homemade blueberry lemonade. I had never heard of such, but I drank every drop while talking with them. Very good stuff. Definitely worth trying. Besides ALL the great food, I was given lots of historical info about Natchez and about the Mammy monument itself & the actress who played Mammy in Gone With the Wind. While this period was not a pleasant time in American history, it is yet history. And the people I met there today were some of the nicest people. They were very knowledgeable about Natchez history and how this most peculiar building came to be in the 1940s. Worth a stop if you're...
Read moreMy wife and I are traveling from Minnesota and wanted to visit parts of Natchez, Mississippi, and I came across this little restaurant called Mammy's Cupboard. My first thought was, did I just travel back in time? First, I was discussed by the woman they had on top of the restaurant. I mean, this is the year 2024, not the 1950s, am I right? Again, when looking at the photos of inside the restaurant, I'm shocked to see all the black mammy dolls, figurines, and whatnot. Don't the owners know that if they got rid of all the objects that represent racism, they would have a much bigger customer base and make more money, maybe even expand. Are they that prejudice that they don't care if they make more money, have more customers, and increase their standings in the restaurant business. I mean, really. We are from Minnesota and can spread the word to whomever is going down south to get away from the cold and eat in a nice restaurant. Do you really want that? I think for now, we will pick a different restaurant. ...
