I was really excited to try this place. I even went out of my way, 11 miles from the highway, to give it a try. I arrived and they hadn't opened back up for dinner quite yet, but the gift shop was open so I took a browse. Wasn't like I imagined it to be. I expected everything in the store to be home made or from their farms. They did have a good selection of things they make so there are no complaints, just dont go in thinking you will only see home made and hand made items. The man who runs the store is one of the sons of the couple that started the restaurant and he was very friendly. This is a good place to stop if you have small children who need to run and burn off some energy from sitting in a car since there is some field next to parking they are allowed to zoom around in which was very nice for my 2 little boys. The restaurant is cafeteria style. All of the employees aren't knowledgeable about pricing and had to keep asking the girl at the ticket register what stuff cost when they were asked since nothing is priced and no menus posted. Some of the food was bland. Most was good, but my stuffing was a little dry and not enough flavor as what you expect in a stuffing. The desserts were delicious. We tried coconut cream pie and pecan pie. Both were really good. It's a quiet eating atmosphere. My server kept our drinks filled which was good, but she didn't know too many answers to my questions about the differences between mennonites (which is what this community is) versus the amish so that was a little disappointing. She was young however and I remember when I was her age I wasn't informative about things I probably should have been either so it was okay. She did tell me the man at the checkout register would know answers and he sure did. He is also a son of the people who started the restaurant. He was able to explain the differences and the mennonite way of life and beliefs in an easy to understand way. He also didn't seem to mind being questioned and made the stop more of an experience than just a meal. Overall, I would stop again and plan to next time I am...
Read moreWe went yesterday for the first time in several years and were shocked and dismayed at the difference in the food. While Yoder’s used to be a place to go for excellent home cooking, it now seems to be a place for warmed-up prepared foods. The meat loaf did seem to be some sort of meat, it was shaped into a loaf, it had some tomato sauce on top so it resembled meat loaf. That’s where the similarity stopped though. It was some form of mystery meat that I had to drown with ketchup to get any taste at all. I think it must have been some sort of purchased frozen product that you heat and serve. The mashed potatoes both looked and tasted like they came from a box, and the gravy was a gelatinous gooey texture. My broccoli casserole was passable but made with Velveeta or something like it. The fried okra and corn muffin were good. My husband’s fried chicken wasn’t good, his lima beans were undercooked, and his mashed potatoes were like mine. The dessert pies (cherry and apple crumble) were passable but nothing to write home about.
We got two kinds of brownies and a pecan pie to bring home. We haven’t tried the pie yet but the brownies are nothing special. I considered buying a cake but I’m glad I didn’t.
We got there at opening time, and the ladies room was nasty by the time we left.
The redeemable factors from our trip yesterday were the pretty drive from Columbus, and the wonderful people who work there, gracious, friendly, and attentive. As a restaurant, however, we left knowing that this was our last visit. That...
