The Belfry is an old schoolhouse repurposed as a bar/restaurant. It features a good sized, well stocked bar with a couple semi-local brews (wish they had something from the nearby Kingdom Brewery)... Smallish dining room inside & larger patio for al fresco dining. Inside is sort of loud & tight quarters. The booths are stock-straight & not-quite-comfortable seating. Tchotchke abounds. The Specials board features many dishes - heavy on the seafood (a surprise in the Northern Kingdom), as well as steaks & chops... the scallops were perfectly cooked - tender & flavorful. Their Jay Peak Burger, although a little undercooked, was tasty too - thick & juicy. Fresh lettuce, tomato, onion & a dill pickle wedge on the side, garlic spread & topped with a fresh (house-baked?) bun. The burger was paired with house-made fries... all good. Didn't try the desserts which were numerous and all sounded good. The service was lacking somewhat - no bread (though promised it was coming) & the appetizer arrived less than 5 minutes before the entrees came to the table... someone forgot to put in the order? When we arrived at 6ish, the dining room was jamming. Definitely an early dinner crowd - by the time we left around 7:30, the room was pretty much cleared out. Nutshell: decent food, meh service, good reuse of space with...
Read moreWe haven’t been here in 20+ years wanted to have a night out somewhere different. And everyone raves about the Belfry. Seated right off, and we waited and waited and waited. Finally our waitress (a blonde girl) came over took our drink order. NO PERSONALITY AT ALL. Ordered apps . Got our apps , no drinks. Another waitress got us water. Finished our apps still no drinks, blonde came back to take our order STILL no drinks. FINALLY another waitress brought our drinks. Drinks were not great they were very unbalanced cocktails. Finished our drinks blonde waitress never came back to ask for more. Our food came out it was decent. Blonde waitress never came back to see how it was. Came with the check we ordered desserts she (blonde) dropped the check off. Didn’t see her until we put the card out to pay. She seemed to be hungry every time she came out of the kitchen she had food in her mouth must be so she didn’t have to ask her tables if they needed anything. She was one of the worst waitresses I have ever had. The other 2 ladies were great they bussed and hustled and asked us how things were. Very disappointed to have someone who seemed like we...
Read moreMy family and I were staying at Jay Peak over the Labor Day weekend. We arrived on Saturday (9/2) and at the recommendation of a Hotel Jay employee, we decided to try the Belfry. We called ahead as we have a 2-year-old to make a reservation, we were given a reservation of 6:15, and arrived at the Belfry right around that time. We were seated promptly, all good so far. We were sitting outside, and 20-25 mins went by, and no wait staff member came to take our order. We were figuring maybe they were short-staffed, the restaurant was moderately busy, and it was the Labor Day weekend.
However, when a wait staff member did come outside, they made eye contact with me, but then proceeded to go to take the order of people who had arrived after we did. At this point, we didn't want to make a scene, so we just packed up and left.
I can't pretend to get into the mind of the wait staff and not sure if there was any bias (racial or otherwise) that could be attributed to as why we were treated that way. We tried to not let it bother us for our vacation but the experience at the Belfry...
