When we decided on an outdoor Vermont wedding the choice of food flowed naturally: barbeque. We have tight attachments to a barbeque place in Rochester, NY that will go unnamed here but were disappointed to learn that even their Troy, NY restaurant could not reach Stowe, VT. That turned out to be the best disappointment of our lives. Through one of our other vendors we heard about Jason and Black Diamond Barbeque. On a summer evening we stopped by, wanting to try the regular menu food without the pressure of a wedding tasting. The meat of the BBQ ribs had a rich smokiness—not a hint of gas flame taste—and fell right off the bone. The mac and cheese had both creaminess and cheddary wonderfulness. Word got back to Jason that future wedding customers were in the restaurant so he came out and chatted with us. He was laid back and totally flexible with menu options—rarities in the wedding universe! There were a few side dishes that we REALLY wanted but were not on Jason’s menu. “Oh, don’t worry about that; we can make you anything you want” he told us. And he delivered on that promise. He created a collard green side dish so amazing we had several guests who went back up to the buffet table at the wedding for seconds and returned with a plate of JUST collards. Towards the end of our planning conversation we turned attention to the cocktail offerings; when he learned of my fondness for bourbon he got up and returned a short time later with a very rare bottle of bourbon and treated me to a generous sample while we finalized details.
Jason delivered food so extraordinary that we have had wedding guests go back to the Stowe area in the months after the wedding just so they could eat at his restaurant. His entire staff could not have been more helpful, either. Several guests commented to us on the helpfulness and friendliness of the bartenders and servers. Beyond providing food and an experience we will always remember, Jason had an eye out for broader ways to make our wedding a success. When a strong storm knocked out power to the barn for a few hours just days before the wedding, Jason arranged for a generator and delivered it to the property himself.
Thank you, Jason and crew! We look forward to our next visit to the Stowe area. Back Diamond will be a...
Read moreOne very disappointing visit since the review below was written. Normally fantastic ribs were dry and over-cooked. It may be best not to ask for sauce on the side with ribs, perhaps they failed to account for this request when deciding how long the ribs should stay in the smoker. They did not charge for the rib plate, which I returned mostly uneaten. I'm hoping this last visit was an just a one-off, but I can't say the food is reliably good.
This is a great little place for BBQ. Atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. There has always been great Vermont beer on tap. The ribs, brisket, chicken and sides have all been nicely done. The ribs had great texture and flavor, pulled nicely from the phone and still had plenty of bite (i.e. not mushy or steamy or fall off the bone). I suggest getting sauce on the side - the ribs don't need the sauce. The brisket is flavorful, appropriately moist and fatty (not too fatty). Salads, mac and cheese, smoked turkey have also been great. The last time I was there, with my wife and some friends, we were treated to a moose charging across the street and back into the forest nearby. The owners told us a bear had been by the previous week. They are open for dinner only, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. They also sell at the Stowe Farmers Market - but I was not wowed by what I had at the...
Read moreEvery true review should cover the good and the bad. First the bad: Black Diamond BBQ is not located directly next to my house I am not able to eat everything on the menu at once.
Both of these pain me greatly.
Now the good: While not close to my house, they are in a old Vermont General store with great views while eating outside at a picnic tables. Oh you think you are “too fancy” for picnic tables, you can sit inside but really get a grip. Get the chicken wings, seriously order them. Smoked, then fried, They are little slices of heaven that fall off the bone. My personal favorite are the habanero maple. If you have the slightest shred of self respect, you will get them with blue cheese. If you are considering ranch, you might as well be back in college ordering papa John’s. It really doesn’t matter what you order, everything on the menu is fantastic. We’ve had a wonderful salads with buttery bib lettuce, brined & stuffed pork chops, simple but not so simple burgers, the best cornbread, etc , etc. Locally sourced ingredients and extreme care always makes for the best meals and Black Diamond does just that.
Do yourself a favor and head over. Get great Vermont beer or nice cocktail and have a...
