"Tò gàr hēdý, eàn polý, ou tí ge hēdý."―Greek proverb
Family-owned Greek diner that's been serving the Mt Joy area for nearly twenty years. The food is your typical diner fare, with everything coming from a can or out of a box. Don't expect any scratch-made goodies here, which is fine because the prices are reflective of that.
Country Fried Steak and Eggs ($8.49)
Any good diner worth their salt should be able to pull off a CFS and Gus's did a good job. The steak itself was one of the smaller ones I have encountered, but at least it was crispy and fried-up fresh. The gravy was thick and hearty but pretty standard in flavor. Eggs were cooked well but the biscuit was a touch dry for my liking. Overall solid dish. 3.5*
Scrapple ($2.99)
Hard for me to go to Amish-country and not get this local "delicacy"; my first attempt we purchased some locally-made scrapple from one of the butcher shops and I cooked it myself and found it to be decent. This time I wanted to get it at a restaurant and it was a whole other story. The exterior was fried up nice and crisp but the interior was so mushy that I could only make it through about halfway despite my attempts at masking the flavour with grape jelly and maple syrup. We suspect they bought a commercially available scrapple, as opposed to one made locally because the the differences were staggering. I suggest they resource this item. 1*
Service & Ambiance
Service was a bit hectic as our waitress seemed to e having a hard time as she kept having to go back and retrieve items from the kitchen. Carissa mentioned that service was usually good here, so I'll believe her―as she's been here numerous times. Ambiance is pretty standard country diner chic décor―with floral patterns and farming implements on the wall. Service 2-4* Ambiance 4*
Value
Great prices for what you get. Probably their strongest attribute. 5*
Gus's is a typical Greek-owned diner that one has probably dined at a thousand times before all across America. There's nothing wrong with that, as the food is good, the atmosphere is raucous and the service is generally fine. Just don't expect to get blown-away by...
Read moreGus’s is my favorite place to eat. Whenever it is my turn to pick where to go, here is where I pick. However I went by myself yesterday and it was horrible. Worst of all, no one cared. It was a very bad experience for me. The food tasted great and it came out in a decent time frame. However the silverware was dirty and the service was terrible. The waitress told me they had brussel sprouts but she was wrong and just brought me mixed vegetables that I did not order nor want. She never came back to see if things were good and my water was empty the entire time. I wanted a to go order which was a huge issue and I had to ask for the check which I was overcharged. Overall she was the worst waitress I ever had at Gus’s. When I went to leave I told Kelly that the food was good but the service was lousy. Instead of her asking what happened she became argumentative and said that I had one of their best servers. She then gave my credit card to a young man and walked off. So she also gave me bad customer service. Yvette left who was one of their best servers thank goodness Becky is still there. If I go back I will request Beckys area because she always gives excellent service and in return I give her an excellent tip. I tried to call and talk to someone about my experience and was told that besides Kelly everyone was in Greece till the end of July. Shame on Gus’s for treating a customer who has been loyal for years. Like a bother and as if I did something wrong. Good food, terrible...
Read moreWe went to Ren Fair was looking for some food after. And came across Gus's had a high rating and many reviews about positive customer service experience. So why not check it out. We walked in got seated right away. We got our drink order in right away. And looked over the menu. It definitely had items on it that most places don't offer such as snapper soup. Which is unique and interesting to me. We ordered two soups creamy potatoes soup and wild mushroom soup. Both came out warm and delicious. The creamy potatoes soup was definitely nice and thick and had a good hardy taste to it. We both got a dinner chicken tenders and meatloaf. And they both came out with big sides. Everything had a good homemade taste to it. And to top off it we had a nice warm basket of there bread which was soft but a bit of crisp to it which was nice. The unsweetened teas we had was definitely refreshing after being in the hot sun all day. And we even was able to get a to go cup for our drinks. Our waitress was on top of everything friendly and was enjoyable to interact with. They deserve the praise they get all waitress work hard and seem to actually enjoy what they are doing which is nice to see. The atmosphere was very quiet for the most part. Was mix between casual and little fancy but comfortable for some one to stop for quick meal. If I was in the area it def be one my top choices to go to and for the amount you pay and the portion it fits right on the point. So check it out for yourself never know what'll...
