My wife and I made the 50-minute trip to Bonnie Cafe, which was our first mistake. We ordered the buffet because we wanted to have some fried catfish on Friday at noon. The catfish was good. The first round we had wasn't very warm, but the second helping of fish was hot and crispy and good, but that's about it. The cooked cabbage was good and hot but was not spiced for flavoring. The Black Eyed Peas were good and hot but had no seasoning. The fried chicken looked like it had been sitting there for a week. It was dried out and looked terrible. They had liver and onions, but the liver was so tough you couldn't cut it. The pork chops they had were less than half an inch thick and looked like they had been cooked till Kingdom Come. They looked like shoe leather. We didn't even try those meats because they looked so unappetizing. The slaw was good, the potato salad was exceptionally good, but the mashed potatoes were, of course, powdered potatoes. The corn was, of course, right out of a can. The spaghetti and marinara sauce looked all dried out, and the cheese in the macaroni and cheese looked curdled, and just chunks, not creamy at all, just chunked up, terrible. The whole experience was not good. The waitresses were good and friendly. They do have a halfway decent dessert bar, but we will not be going back. In fact, at the price, I would say, stay away. I don't like giving bad reviews like this but I have to tell the truth as I see it. If this review was helpful, please acknowledge that. Thank you. And if you would hit, Follow me, I would...
Read moreOMG!! Just finished eating the best home cooking we’ve ever had at a restaurant! We were on a 16 hour trip from MO to VA and Googled for a place to eat and, as fate and luck would have it, Bonnie Cafe came into our hungry lives. It is about 5 miles off of I-64, but so worth the few extra minutes to get there. Not only is the food ‘lay down and drool’ fabulous, but the place is also squeaky clean (even the bathroom was spotless and smelled so refreshing)! The waitresses couldn’t have been nicer nor more accommodating either. The chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes with white heavenly gravy was to die for. The catfish fillets were like the best, flaky fiddler you’ve ever had, but someone took the bones out for you and lost the tail. We are so tickled and thrilled to have found this place and can’t wait to come back on the trip home next week! I am not kidding about this - do your taste buds and bodies a favor and eat a wholesome yummy meal like (and maybe slightly better than) mom and grandma used to make!!! Left a 50% tip just because the whole experience was that good. It is located at a small airfield for small private planes and you can watch the planes landing and taking off thanks to all the windows. Also, quite a nice collection of aviation memorabilia. Oh, and the prices are...
Read moreThis was my first visit here. Found it on a Google search. So glad I did, too. This is a hidden gem in Mt. Vernon, for sure. The place has such heart and soul, not to mention great food, staff, and atmosphere. When I saw that they had a "fallen comrade table," I knew I had to try this place. The restaurant was so quaint and understated. Nice diner style. Good sized buffet with lots of choices. The fried chicken was so good, as was everything that I put on my plate from the buffet. The prices were reasonable too. After our meal we looked around at the walls of service men from one corridor to another. There was such respect and honor given to them. It was awe-inspiring. I am looking forward to returning. And maybe this time, I'll have more time to check out the photos and information of the service men. What more could a person ask for? ... Great food, awesome atmosphere and friendly and informative staff. Thanks to Kimmy for having the photos on the website so we could find this wonderful place. And our server Christy was on the ball and deserves a big thanks. We will...
