One of Mom’s Maxim was always, “If you aren’t going to say anything nice, then don’t say anything at all.” Mom’s Maxim was axiom of the Golden Rule.
Mea culpa: Last week, I had dinner with close friends, family really, at the DLB. Uncharacteristically, for a conflux of reasons amongst staff, not everything was at its best. That happens everywhere with everyone including yours truly and was quite at odds with the many fine meals I have had at the DLB with someone I love taking to dinner.
Restaurant reviewing is something new to me and when the opportunity arose to review last week’s dinner, I was uncharacteristically blunt, too harsh, and not fare in my comments. Yes, there were some small concerns, but I could have handled them that night rather than commenting on them in writing. It was also unfair to bring those concerns to light but not the excellent preparation of my steak, or the great flavor of the food. My critique was also at odds with the 20% tip I left for otherwise being reasonably well satisfied with the meal.
Restaurant work is hard work with so many variables to keep under control and so many bosses to please. I almost always find the food and service in Northern Michigan to run from very good to outstanding as I have always found it to be at the DLB.
My apologies DLB for being a unfair in my “review.” My apologies Mom for not...
Read moreA phenomenal, out of the way, you need to go place!! Douglas Lake Bar sits on Douglas Lake. On Sunday evenings in the summer they have entertainment in the yard on the Lakeside. We have come to listen to the music and have a few libations because it is a perfect ending to a perfect weekend in northern Michigan. Now for the food yes yes and yes I'm not even sure what to highly recommend but definitely do not leave without having the shrimp Lenny, the wedge salad (only DLB doesn't right). They have specials that are wonderful haven't had a bad one yet. Their regular menu items are wonderful!!!!!!! Reservations are highly suggested. This past Sunday my husband and I came to DLB thinking we would just have a drink and listen to the entertainment, so I just gave them my name and requested that if they have anything opening up in the outdoor patio area that we would have a late dinner. the highlight of the evening was our Buster however I do not remember her name terribly terribly sorry she was wonderful and somewhat entertaining as well, without dismissing the efforts of our waitress Buser was very very attentive and will definitely make a wonderful addition to wait staff And again DLB does...
Read moreMy wife and I have eaten here many times over the past years. We were celebrating our 21st wedding anniversary and wanted to return to one of our favorite places (for valentines, anniversaries, etc). Sadly this was our first less than stellar experience. I ordered my usual “DLB” and my wife ordered the jumbo scallops. The steak wasn’t as flavorful as usual. The three asparagus spears seemed a little stingy. The scallops smelled “fishy.” I was saddened that after telling our server that the scallops didn’t taste right, she offered us a drink or desert. Her service was wonderful but it was apparent that besides more food or drink, there was no other compensation. In her defense my wife did eat two of the five scallops. We are just not the people to make a scene or complain. She ate one, then said aloud, maybe it’s just me. She ate another. Offered one to me (I love scallops). It wasn’t good. This is my second time that I ever wrote a restaurant review. I am hoping that maybe we just came on an off night. Maybe it’s COVID, maybe it’s due to this being the last weekend, I’m not sure. When you spend over $100 for a meal for two I guess I was hoping for a...
