Haven’t been to every one of all the hot chicken places around Nash but Grandaddy’s is currently my favorite. As far as I can tell there’s about a trillion restaurants that claim to be the original and I have no idea who’s correct. It might even be truly known anymore. But hoo boy does this place reallly just feel like it is the first.
Atmosphere/service: Cute little storefront-style cafe. Nothing fancy; just a few tables and chairs in a modest dining room. It’s clean, well-maintained, local news on the tv. It’s exactly what it’s supposed to be. From the first visit, they treated me like I was one of their best friends showing up to a cookout. Kitchen, counter, and owner all make me feel welcome and like they’re genuinely happy to hook up me up with some good chow. Now sidebar: working food service can really suck, I’ve done it. I don’t expect food workers to fake happiness for my benefit, and they get to be annoyed at their job just as much as I do alone in my office. That said, it’s a REALLY nice feeling to not only feel like I’m not a burden, but that I’m actually welcomed to place an order. I hope they don’t have to act but if they do they deserve Oscars.
Food: Alright what you really care about, I’ll try to be quick. Chicken tenders extra hot is my thing. Skin is mega crispy and all but shatters it’s awesome. Very flavorful and a much more nuanced use of spices and herbs in the breading and spicy melange compared to most other hot chickens. Chicken itself is easily the most flavorful, the moistest, the highest quality meat and it’s well-breaded, and well-fried. I forgot that chicken actually had a distinct flavor until these tendies. Heat levels is your choice of 5, plain to xhot. Xhot maxes out similar to around just a ‘hot’ at the bigger name places, so spice lovers don’t be shy, but it’s still nothing to trifle with, especially for those who don’t do heat. Sides- pretty much all 3 or 4 bucks for generous portions, like at least a half pint, maybe more. Coleslaw is hard sweet on the sugar-vinegar coleslaw scale. I’m normally a strict vinny-slaw man but this commits to sweet so hard I love it. Has apples in it. Fried corn-awesome, good vegetarian version of nash hot chicken actually, and it’s tasty corn on the cob too. Note the breading does use an egg-wash for adhesion so still not vegan. Greens-poppin, tender and funky. Fries-better than most, skinny style beer battered. Had a slice of cake from there once too, pretty good.
You found it-this is the secret gem local eatery that slaps harder than will smith.
Anyway thus ends my open love letter to this restaurant,...
Read moreThe Old Hickory Bistro is phenomenal. We absolutely love going there. The ambiance is wonderful as it is quaint and charming just like the wonderful area it is located in. The Owners Tara and Danny greet everyone with a warm smile and invite them in to enjoy a delectable meal or a superb dessert and a delicious cup of coffee. The Food is incredible and the desserts are to die for. We are locals and we eat at the Bistro at least once a week and sometimes more. We love their breakfasts and they have such a great variety including home-made quiche, omelets that are stuffed full of yummy fresh ingredients and your choice of cheeses, fabulous fluffy pancakes and waffles and my favorite Bananas Foster French Toast along with typical breakfast fare eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits and gravy. The Sandwiches are HUGE, made fresh to order and super yummy and truly big enough for two people to split and both be satisfied. And the home-made desserts OMGracious !! Even if I'm full after we eat there I have to have dessert so I take it home with me. The Buttermilk Chess Pie, the Limoncello Marscapone Cake and the Butterfinger Brownies are my favorites and they are homemade by Josh who works in the kitchen. And let me tell you about their Dinner Specials. Danny is one of the owners and he also cooks as this is a family owned business. His Steaks have the most delicious flavor from his special marinade and they are so tender you could cut them with a fork. They also have Italian night and their Spaghetti with Meatballs is sooooooooooooooo good. You just can't go wrong not matter what you order. I just can't say enough good things about Old Hickory Bistro !! Do yourself a favor and come out to see...
Read moreSometimes I feel bad when I give a less than favorable review and this is one of those times. We were looking forward to trying this establishment out. We lived here for many moons and never gave it a ponder. We both thought we would try the fish sandwich since any other meat is not on option. The staff " owners" without a doubt were most friendly and passionate. We both got the sandwich and chose our sides wich for me was okra and her fries. I also reckon it was not really discussed that no sides came with the 12+ dollar sandwich and the drink selection was most limited. We were asked how we wanted the fish mild, med or hot. I chose med she chose mild. I thought it was awkward the also cooked my side wich was okra with the medium spice. I did not particularly want it that way for I was gonna share with stephie. I did appreciate the whole fried okra for sure. When I saw the fish and since I neglected to ask I thought it must be catfish, especially for the over 12 dollar price. I was hoping it wasn't Swai or tilapia, and it was swai. The woman tried to sell it up, though I know better. It is a vietnamese catfish cousin and much cheaper then catfish. We spent almost 40$ on two sandwiches and water. I'm not saying it was bad, just overpriced for what it was. I should of asked more questions. I wish them all the best, the place was most clean and...
