this place was highly recommended to me by a friend of mine while we were here on a business trip. we stopped in after a long day of work so he could grab a beer and i could grab a bite. their menu is made up completely of their original spins on american tavern fare -- which i already respect -- but what i got exceeded expectations.
i got the chicken and waffles with a side of fries. forget what you think that implies, because carmody's goes its own way. the fries are fried in such a way that they have a lighter texture more reminiscent of potato straws than mcd's. this makes for an experience that is very.... well, i dunno if you've ever heard a fry described as "refreshing" before, but that's the best way to put it. and that's not even getting to the main event.
these chicken and waffles are not your basic hipster bar "we put two chicken tenders on some basic bisquick waffles". you get a huge juicy chicken breast, topped with bacon, cheese, and house made maple sauce. i could not place what the sauce was, but apparently it's made in-house and it's a secret. this and the very sweet, almost candied waffle, make for an AMAZING centerpiece, unlike any chicken & waffles i've had anywhere else.
carmody's, much like the city of pittsburgh, walks its own path. it looks like your everyday sports bar when you walk in, but it quickly becomes apparent that it does its own thing and is willing to fly in the face of tradition in the best possible way in order to make something way more delicious. absolutely recommended if you find yourself on the neville island side...
Read moreOur first time. First the place is very clean and has inside tables, bar, patio and banquet seating. Truly full service restaurant. The service was excellent. The menu features both regular, seasonal and daily specials. We started with the espresso martini and orange mule both were excellent. Then we had the crab seasonal appetizer. This was supposed to be crab and vinegrette. However there was zero vinegar in the vinegrette. However the crab was fresh. Next we had the seasonal shorts ribs over polenta and the French dip. The French dip was the best I ever had. The short ribs were good but not hot. Overall the meal was good but not great. I will be back to try again.
Second visit. We started with the artichoke dip. The dip is excellent. The fried bread that was served with it, not so great. I would rather have had rolls or crackers. Next we had the prime rib dinner special and the French dip. Both were excellent. I look forward to our next visit.
Third visit. We ordered the Fish bites, Ruben, Pretzel and Chicken flatbread. Everyone enjoyed the food. Excellent service and reasonable prices. We will be back.
Oct 2025. We tried two specials: meatloaf and the sauerbraten. The meatloaf came with excellent mashed potatoes and gravy. The meatloaf itself was not good, way too much onion. The sauerbraten came with excellent potato pancakes. The meat itself was chewy and not tender. This was our first time not having a great meal. We will be back but we can't recommend the...
Read moreI was hoping to write a great review, unfortunately that isn't the case. This restaurant is really nice inside, and has a great outdoor seating area as well. The bar is above average and the wait staff was very friendly.
We ordered a Fish Medley special at $20.95 that was way over priced. Although taste was fine it was served without a vegetable and very watery, (rice base was where liquid came from). Next was a Four Cheese and Tomato Sandwich. A little dissapointed as the bread over powered the cheese, and with the web site talking up their "scratch made" items I was expecting the tomato to have a home grown taste, but no it was one of the green house tomatoes without any taste. A Reuben sandwich completed our order, thank goodness this didn't disappoint. The fries were soggy, hoping for crisp, the Cole slaw was good, and the ice tea was some of the best I have had in sometime.
We know this location is new, the menu is still in flux, and the old location in Wexford is hanging over their heads, but we are encouraged they will improve and become one of our favorites. The location is great, has ample parking and the...
