Huber's restaurant has finally been ruined after recent changes (9/23/23). Would absolutely not recommend anymore.

What changes? The restaurant has decided to only offer a SINGLE menu option for $25 a plate - for lunch and dinner, same item, same price. There are no salads (we asked), no different options for kids, no vegetarian alternatives, no gluten free, nothing. There is one menu option that's it. See attached picture of menu for the unfortunate details.

The menu option and my review of each: Country fried chicken (greasy, quite salty and mediocre at best) Huber Honey Ham (They must be calling store-bought ham Huber ham because it tastes and looks exactly like store-bought ham, not good) Fried biscuits (thankfully they left these alone) Country Slaw or Seasonal Salad (gave us neither so no idea how they taste) Chicken and dumplings (Horrendous. Almost no chicken and the broth tastes exactly like Campbell's Chicken Noodle Soup. Dumplings also looked and tasted like large pieces of tofu aka flavorless) REAL Mashed Potatoes (Not bad but would be better if served warm) Green Beans (Awful. Came directly out of a can)

My grandma ordered the peanut butter pie because there's nothing here she could eat and it was not good either. Didn't taste anything like peanut butter. She didn't even finish it.

What made it worse is that for three people paying $25 each (no drinks included of course) we received an 8 piece fried chicken meal: 4 breasts, two wings, two drumsticks. And the sides are tiny, maybe a third of a cereal bowl or about 1 cup each. That's $75 for an eight piece chicken meal with 4 tiny sides for the entire table. That's EXTREMELY overpriced for basic country cooking that was on the whole sub par.

I gave it two stars because I felt bad for the server who's initial interactions with customers after this are going to be "should we just leave and go somewhere else?" He was at least friendly. The bathroom however, was disgusting. And this is where I see more major issues, for a expensive restaurant customer's expectations will rise and Huber's makes no attempt to meet those expectations for the high prices. Not the food, not the service, not even the decor is appropriate for the price. Its a wood-paneled warehouse, servers are in jeans and t-shirts and the whole experience leaves you wondering what exactly it is that you're paying for.

This is how you ruin a restaurant. I grew up going to Huber's and slowly over the years I've seen changes but this is a complete deal killer, my family will not go back. Not just the restaurant, we don't really see the point of going out to Huber's at all anymore, not for produce or to shop. Its supposed to be a day trip and what's the point of a day trip if you can't even eat at the restaurant? Its unfortunate to lose such an iconic local attraction but the way it appears greed has gotten the best of Huber's and its ruined the experience. Its just not worth it.

Overall 2/5, not...

It pains me to say it, but I think I’m over Huber’s Restaurant. A couple of years ago, I discovered that they only serve the "Country Dinner Platter Served Family Style" on weekends, which costs $26.99 per adult and $12.99 for children (ages 4-11). We hadn’t been back for a weekend visit since. While this family-style dining might appeal to those with large appetites, it’s pricey compared to their weekday menu, where Country Style Suppers range from $15.99 to $21.99. With the Dinner Platter, customers pay for both ham and chicken, even if they only want one—or neither—along with sides like coleslaw, seasonal salad (which for us was Waldorf salad), mashed potatoes with gravy, and green beans, all included whether you want them or not.

This weekend, we were celebrating our son’s birthday, so I checked their website but found no mention of weekend pricing or menu restrictions. I called twice on Friday and was assured that the regular weekday menu would be available on Saturday. Based on that, Saturday afternoon I made a reservation for nine people.

Unfortunately, when we arrived, the weekend pricing and limited menu were still in effect. While our server was excellent and did her best, it was frustrating to have been misled after confirming the details ahead of time. Having arrived with a hungry family looking forward to an evening of farm play after dinner, I was told that weekends are too busy to offer a varied menu. I find this surprising since many other restaurants, like Cracker Barrel, Cheddar’s, and Texas Roadhouse, manage to provide more options despite being busy. Huber’s, which once had a varied weekend menu, seems unable to overcome this challenge.

If you’re planning a weekend visit and aren’t prepared for the higher prices or family-style dining of the restaurant, I’d suggest reconsidering Huber's in favor of other options. The food is good, but it’s not $27-per-person good. The menu I am sharing here is the only menu available on weekends, and as of today, it’s still not listed on their website. If you are visiting on the weekend you'll want to know what to expect. My advice: google a fried biscuit recipe for home, and opt for a more affordable restaurant where you'll get better value...

So I visited today with my family with the primary goal of pumpkin picking for the kids, but we'd not eaten so we went to the restaurant. My review is strictly for the restaurant.

First let me say that the servers were amazing; super friendly, helpful, all around just wonderful people who made you feel extremely welcome. Unfortunately, that was the only good part in my opinion.

I had a party of 5 adults, a preteen, and a toddler. What I did not realize when we sat down was that the menu was static, we'd looked online on the way that had more options but apparently something was going on where they were only doing this static fried chicken and ham family style dinner.

We got what looked like a whole bird with a couple of extra legs and wings, the ham was about as thinly sliced as you'd expect for a sandwich from the deli (5 pieces), some slightly less than quart-sized bowls of mashed potatoes, green beans, and chicken & dumplings (one of each), then a smaller bowl of some fruit salad thing and another same-sized bowl of slaw. In addition to the food, we got two glasses (not pitchers) of sangria, and two deserts (one was a pretty giant slice of pie that two of us ate). Writing it out it sounds like a decent amount of food but I wish I'd taken a picture because it really wasn't what I'd expect of some place charging $25/person just for the meal itself. Total bill was about $200, $250 after tip (I tip based on service, not the food, if you're wondering why I tipped that much while disliking the restaurant; like I said, servers/hosts/bussers were stellar).

The chicken itself was pretty average for fried chicken and the pieces themselves were below average in size; I'm not an enormous dude but one bone-in breast was about the size of my fist. As I mentioned, the ham was sandwich thin and not enough for everyone but it tasted pretty good. The rest of the sides were also pretty average and as I mentioned above, portions left a lot to be desired.

It was definitely not a meal worthy, in my opinion, of the price tag. I know it's not the same kind of restaurant but I've fed the same group of people at Bucca for half the cost, and everyone took home days worth of leftovers. I certainly won't...

The recipes have taken a bit of a hit. The dinner is served family style. We have spent many holiday celebrations at Huber's through the last 30-plus years. We miss Joe and the Mrs. They change the one reason we drive 1.5 hours, the chicken & dumplins. The biscuits are not as fluffy, but they are wonderful with the apple butter. The fried chicken is some of the best I have had in my 68 years. The blackberry cobbler has improved. The ham was good. The green beans needed seasoning (we are on the farm). The mashed potatoes were authentic and covered in delicious milk gravy. The dumplins were disappointing. Generally, we buy a gallon of dumplins for home. We enjoyed them. However, they just did not taste the same. The green goddess dressing changed some time ago. The coleslaw needed more dressing as it was a bit dry. We should have opted for summer salad. In the past, we enjoyed birthday dinner on the house, which got lost in the transition, but we go just the same. We supported the children on the go-fund-me to allow the Huber's legacy to continue. It is a beautiful trip and a fun time. Holidays and celebrations with family and friends are special at Hubers. If you have not experienced Hubers, you are missing out on a joyous occassion beyond holidays. We are always going to support Hubers. Please bring back the wonderful dumplins'!
