I have been a customer of Pawling Deli since it’s opening in around 2016. I have seen it endure hardships, closing down, covid, and just about every other issue that can befall a bodega of its kind. But it’s a bodega that is one of a kind. The owner, Abdul, has made it his personal mission to make the lives of the people in our neighborhood easier. He greets my friends and myself with a winning smile and a joke every time we come in, no matter the hour, rain or shine. He has helped me escape dangerous situations as a young woman, by protecting my friend and myself from belligerent men from the neighborhood. He has created a niche for himself and opened its doors to us on upper pawling. For that I’m thankful. However. There has been a new element to this niche. He has braids, and a total lack of human civility. He is single-handedly ruining the atmosphere that Abdul has fought to create, and as one of pawling deli’s longest standing customers, I’m saddened.
