Barry's Village Deli has been in business since 1970, providing the area with all kinds of delicious deil-inspired food including sandwiches piled high as well matzo soup, knishes, blintzes, pancakes, lox and many, many more things. From half sour pickles and grapenut custard, to creamed herring and latkas, their offerings are extensive and you'll be able to enjoy them on the spot or to-go.
The place has history and it feels like it upon walking in. Many people's bubbis have probably been there and sitting there for a meal makes you feel like you're a part of something bigger something with history, and I've only had good experiences there on my few trips there.
I've had many things there including the blintzes which were pretty tasty as well as their corned beef sandwhiches which I love. I've also enjoyed some of their pickles, their baked goods (their chocolate rugelachs are awesome) and I hope to one day order and devour the famous "Artie's Ultimate Fresser" which features turkey, roast beef, corned beef, swiss cheese, onion, coleslaw, Russian dressing and mustard ($16.99).
Everything on the menu is under $20 and their service is great, both behind the deli counter as well as in the dining room. Parking on the street is easy to find and you can also access it via the green line (the Waban T stop is like.. 20 yards away? 30 yards?)
So whether you're with your bubbi, with friends or with your family, you should definitely swing by this place if you're looking for a deli fix. I personally like it way better than Zaftigs and it's a lot easier to get to and park there than if you were to go to Michael's Deli in...
Read moreI moved away from Newton in 2012 but come home often to visit family and recently returned to spend a few weeks. Barry's in under new management but clearly the service is not the same. Ordered for pickup and was told that I should call again when I arrived because of the pandemic. I let them know I was already on the way, they could bring it out when it was ready and described my truck (why call again less than 5 minutes later?). "No problem... black truck... got it" was the response. So I wait outside and watch orders being run out to cars but after 20 minutes I call (I am literally the only car parked there at this point). The response was a terse "it's been ready, you're supposed to call" to which I described my previous interaction. The food runner steps outside looks me right in the eye sitting there waiting for him and instead of bringing my food he just drops it on a table just outside the door like he tossing his keys down. It was absolutely clear this was intentional to show me his contempt and force me to retrieve it. The worst part is that I paid by card and tipped in advance. $13 for for 2 breakfast sandwiches. I don't care how long it took, that it's pricey or having to walk a few feet to get my food but when you're intentional inconveniencing someone that's about the biggest breach of hospitality I can think of. A big F you to this customer since 1978. I won't be back during this trip or any other time...
Read moreJust paid $12.99 for a tuna melt the size of a postage stamp. Was supposed to be grilled - instead it is burnt (with 4 large burn marks). Regarding the "tuna" & the "melt": neither was in sight. They did not remember to put any tuna in & the cheese is not melted by any stretch of the imagination. Ridiculous & disappointing. Which is a shame, because we've always enjoyed the food at Barry's (for decades). And we love to support a long-time, local small business.
I wouldn't write a bad review after 1 poor experience (I like to give the benefit of the doubt)....but unfortunately, today's experience follows 2 lousy experiences with Barry's in the spring (also takeout; items missing from both orders, despite being charged for them. And one of the times, the door was locked & my husband was standing there knocking while 2 or 3 employees were chatting away for several minutes with him in their line of vision. When, thru the door, he mentioned my name on the order, they still wouldn't let him in until they 1st called me to confirm he was who he said he was/that he should be picking up the order. Puzzling &...
