Okay the ONLY reason I’m giving this place 3 stars is because the food was delish and the coffee was awesome. The waitress was nice as well. The problem I had was with the owner, and how he handled the situation we came to.
The waitress came to our table, took our order, and after we ordered she then said “ do you guys want some extra potatoes we have in the back from breakfast too?” In my eyes, that meant, we have extra potatoes from breakfast we’re more than likely not going to serve anymore because it’s after breakfast time… and instead of throwing them out, we’ll give them to you… well apparently not. My bad for assuming but I wasn’t planning on asking for potatoes considering I was already paying $16 just for my sandwich. If they’re going to be given to me because there are extras. Absolutely we will take them.
We get to the front and the waitress tried to charge me for the potatoes I never asked for… I said I’m sorry but I was under the impression these were free by the way you said it. She said ok let me go talk to someone in the back. She then comes back with the owner, who was extremely rude and arrogant about the situation. He comes out saying “so we don’t want to pay for the potatoes we got” I then stated I did not ask for them, and I would have never taken the waitress up on her offer if I knew that I would have been charged for them… he then turned to the waitress where she told him that there was extra and she just figured it would be fine… and he turns back around and says to me “we’re not in the business of giving food away for free here, and I would have never made them if I knew you weren’t going to pay for them…” he then said he was going to be putting it on her tab… meaning the waitress, I was so shocked that this man who is an owner of from what I think would be a pretty successful business, is talking to me like this over a $3 side of potatoes… and being rude to his staff as well in front of customers. he treated my friend with the same attitude… it’s unprofessional.
Needless to say, what was supposed to be a nice mom’s lunch turned into a bad experience with a local place we’ve been wanting to try…
More than likely won’t be coming back for no other reason than the owner treating me and his waitress with disrespect. You would think that having a new customer in your place, he would treat them with respect...
Read moreI visited Fieldstone on Saturday with my wife for the first time this Saturday.
The good:
Walking in the front door gives all the right vibes for an amazing coffee and breakfast experience.
The staff are smiling and seem happy to be there. They're wearing company shirts, but also seemed confident expressing their own styles. Everything is clean and comfortably illuminated. Bagged coffee beans, t-shirts, mugs, and other "goodies" are on open shelving for purchase.
The dining room is small and cozy, so if you're a bigger guy like me, then some of the tables around the perimeter are too close for comfort.
SATURDAY'S ONLY They have an Eggs Benedict which is out of this world amazing. The hollandaise sauce is rich, the English muffin is crispy and a little sweet, and the side potatoes are well seasoned and crispy.
The bad:
The drink menu is almost exclusively "specialty" beverages and the basics are completely missing.
Unusual flavors: you got it. But if you want a standard "vanilla latte" or a regular "caramel cappuccino," you'll have to have a three minute (friendly and pleasant) conversation with the waiter about finding something else because those items are not on the menu.
Instead of a vanilla latte, I wound up with a honey cinnamon latte. The espresso shot was on the bitter side, and I couldn't taste the honey.
My wife and I each bought a bag (340g) of beans (Vanilla Cinnamon Arabica, and French vanilla Arabica) to use at home with our Breville conical burr grinder and AeroPress.
The beans are very oily and have an unpleasant sour smell (different from anaerobic fermented beans) that isn't as noticeable before opening the bag. See photos for the two Fieldstone roasts, and that of a nearby competitor.
Neither bag had a batch number or "roasted date" so I can't tell how old the beans are.
Admittedly, I didn't experiment with grind, dosage, or timing, but my standard 18 gram dose at a medium-fine grind (21 on Breville in photo) for each of the two varieties we tried produced undrinkable coffee.
My wife and I both dumped it down the drain, and we will likely just compost the remaining beans.
Based on my one experience here, I'm not eager to return immediately, but I would absolutely give it another try later on because there was definitely a lot...
Read moreIf you have food allergies avoid this place at all costs!! Sadly not going to return to Fieldstone after years of supporting them.
I’ve had dozens of conversations with restaurant staff that always treat me with respect, ensure they’ll remake my dish and avoid cross contamination, politely explain everything to me. That day, I got the same dish I always do, and when I saw large brown chunks of something on the chicken, I got nervous, because it looked off like some sort of seeds or nuts. Even the waitress was unsure and said it looked like everything-bagel seasoning to her. I politely asked for them to take it back.
At this point, a woman who I believe was an owner came out to talk with me. Never in my life have I ever experienced such an uncomfortable and confrontational situation when expressing anxiety related to my food allergies. This woman immediately asked me if I have an epinephrine pen, like a nurse asking me for medical info. The judgement I received for not carrying an Epi-Pen was really bizarre and invasive. Then the real cherry on top was her telling me that they can get in huge trouble with the health department and it was my fault for not sharing my allergies up front. Oh you can get in trouble? Well I can end up in the hospital! Really gave a bad impression of caring about your business and covering yourself versus caring about the customer experience.
The owner did the exact opposite of reassuring me — not explaining how she cooked it, or not offering to remake it without the stuff on the chicken. She also asked if I wanted it boxed up to-go….. why on earth would I want it boxed up if I’m nervous to eat it?
Beyond that this place is in my opinion, over priced for the portions you receive. And with all the awesome and welcoming cafes in the area, I would not recommend this one.
EDIT: I declined a substitute meal, because I was disappointed with the service I received, where I was made to feel like I’m in the wrong. I’d recommend some inner reflection to recognize the effect that your judging words have on customers with good...
