I have always loved O'Neals Seafood, the dine in is awesome, fresh, tasty homemade.. as a native of Hatteras who moved to this side.. O'Neals is like home, a true Kinnakeeter" who has a rich heritage of watermen and commercial fisherman in both sides of family, (The Farrows & O'Neal's) I can say this is one of the best, if dining ..its all great, though in season I'm partial to the crabcake.. and in past 12 or more years I've had brothers, uncle's & even a son who have sold or worked for O'Neals and they have nothing but good to say, this company is not only family oriented but a company of good value.. because I usually would get my seafood from family, I hadn't purchased but small orders here for my own self (which is always great) until recently ..when I had the privilege to purchase a large steam shrimp order for a son's marriage reception, ( his shrimp order from home had fallen thru) so mama to the rescue ..or I should say O'Neals to the rescue!, I ordered from Mrs.Candy, and like her name she's as sweet, and by the way..good people skills cannot be taught, hers came naturally..she truly was genuine kind and helpful, Thank you Mrs. Candy.. taking my last minute order with customer skills not seen often, accommodating my late order, and doing so without acting hostile.. which I've encountered in other seafood markets.. I'd give 5 stars plus if able but y'all...are a #10 in my book.. *definitely worth dining during hours open, or purchasing your seafood orders fresh off the boats. And your supporting our hardworking fishermen as well... It may be a little off the beaten but busy, overrun path of the Outer Banks, but located only 5minutes or so from the Manteo, Manns Harbor, Wanchese intersection..its a drive well worth taking, and a not hectic, pretty drive.. check it out yourself, and see what's fresh in season...
Read moreThis is not a review of the restaurant because I have not eaten there. It is a review of the hard crabs and they are strictly a 1 star at best. I would not buy hard crabs there. I had 2 bad experiences in a row. The first I bought a dozen large males only to get home and discover 4 females in the dozen which were not only light but on the small side. I decided not to say anything to them and chalk it up to a one time mistake as they are my go to seafood market. Then a week later we get a bushel of large males only to find out that half of them were mostly not edible because they basically crumbled in your hand and had no meat, plus there may of been 2 dozen that you could call #1s. Now I decided to let them know what is going on with their crabs. I went in and talked to the manager who was very polite and honest. He explained that is what they got from the crabbers and they don't have time to cull the crabs and that he couldn't promise that it would not happen again. So I would not buy crabs there. Should not even get a 1 star much less 3 but I will still buy my fish there in the off season when everyone else is closed. But for now I will be going to the Whalebone. I would still be going to O'Neals for fish if there had been some type of consideration to mitigate the 225 dollars we spent in the 2 transactions and the fact that I have been driving past other seafood markets to shop there. Even the manager said Whalebone has better crabs...
Read moreI love lunch here. Favorite meal is anything with soft shell crabs, and Oneals has them pretty much whenever they are available.
I was in there on 12/30 for lunch and decided to pick up 100 oysters and 2 lbs of greentails. They were busy. The greentail tray was getting low. She eked out the last of the shrimp to make 2 lbs, and my husband brought up the card to pay. He asked if we could get 2 more lbs of shrimp. She huffed, then went to the back, spoke to a guy back there and brought us a bag. We paid her for them and brought them home. The second bag was not healthy looking. The shells were pinkish and gray. We cooked them all together, but half of them are rotten...mushy and broken in the middle. That second bag was bad, and I feel like she knew it. She could have said we got the last 2 lbs, but she didn't. She sold us junk. When she gave us the oysters, they came in a big green mesh bag, like avocados. When I asked her for a box lid or something to protect our car, she said " You can have a bag." A plastic grocery bag for 20 pounds of oysters. We luckily had a towel in the trunk so it didn't ruin the carpet, but her attitude was pretty crummy, like I didn't just drop 100 dollars at her store. There are friendlier places to buy seafood,...
