I'll first start with the fact that my wife and I are beer and brewery fanatics. We love going to any brewery and trying just about anything. That being said, we know what we prefer to drink. I typically go for IPAs while my wife loves sours and certain stouts. We also know that most breweries don't make sours and some don't have the kinds of stouts she typically enjoys.
We showed up to Freehouse last Friday. I needed to use the restroom, so my wife went to the bar to order for the two of us (as it's typically easier to find an IPA than a sour or stout). While getting a sample or two of the various offerings to determine which beer she would decide on, a person at the bar named Arthur (which we assume is an owner or brewer, as he suggested as much) began giving my wife a hard time. He finally told the bartender to refuse giving my wife any samples of their beers and stating "this is a selling-beer place, not a tasting-beer place!" My wife was so offended by the comment, she obviously chose not to order any beer (which she always ends up ordering something, even if it's not her favorite), paid for mine, and we left immediately.
We were fortunate to visit many of the other Charleston-area breweries as well as many others across the country. This was by far one of the worst, if not the very worst, brewery and/or beer experiences we've ever encountered in our travels. The IPA I had was probably the worst one I had the entire weekend. We will not be going back to Freehouse ever again and I will recommend to anybody traveling to Charleston to...
Read moreThe beer was a 5 but the brewery bar and atmosphere were sketchy.
My traveling companion is a big fan of Treehouse Brewing up in MA, so while in SC we thought it would be cool to visit Freehouse Brewery. Let's put it this way, if we had been two ladies, or if I had a lady with me, I would have done an about face on the road into the brewery. Cognizant of the fact that many are built in warehouse areas or in old properties or mills being repurposed, this place was a tad bit on the edge.
Long down a dirt road past old abandoned properties and vehicles, we made the final dip down toward the bay through and old gate. A couple of parked cars (ones that did not appear to be abandoned) were next to an old building. We entered through an old sliding barn door, which was opened already. The chill from the outside was abated by standing under the industrial sized heat lamp mounted on the ceiling. We took our cue from Mr. Pringles, the cat.
The inside was old, but not cluttered, and relatively clean. Of all the other breweries in the area, this one was the least attended with us being the 5th and 6th customers, therein. The beer was great but next time I would pick some up in the store and take it home. The visit to the brewery was not what we...
Read moreI went here for a meet and greet and it was such a pretty spot with lots of seating and really nice views. I only talked to the bartender but he was really friendly! I ordered the Bianca pizza not long after I got there and after a while I asked about it, he was genuine and apologized, mentioned they had some newer staff working that night, and made sure it was taken care of. I didn’t really mind since I was having a good time socializing. The pizza was really good when it came and I loved that they had more than just plain cheese, there were a few veggie options which was refreshing since most places that get creative with pizzas tend to focus on meat. I didn’t try any of the drinks this time but I definitely want to next. The only little thing I noticed was the last step outside could use a light because it’s easy to miss in the dark. Overall I really liked it here, the space was so pretty, the food was good, and the bartender was kind. I’d...
