Carriage Inn — Restaurant in North Kingstown

One of the oldest restaurants in Rhode Island, and New England, is located across from an autobody shop, diagonal from a cemetery, and sitting on a rural road that feels like it's from the 70s.

Please do not judge a book by its cover, or a restaurant by its outside. I've yet to fully discover all that the Carriage Inn fully is, but here is what I've found:

An expansive menu. There are cocktails, wine, beer, and 11 rotating drafts. The end has all the typical American fixings, with gluten-free options such as rolls and pasta to substitute.

An amazing presentation of food. One time, I bought a burger to-go. When I forgot to ask for gluten-free rolls. What was picked up was a toasted burger bun that should have been in a FOOD COMMERCIAL. Normally, I don't write in all caps, but this bun was...George Clooney in glutinous form. Props to the chef!

A nice atmosphere. Some of the conversation I impolite overheard at my.last visit included an elementary schooler celebrating their summer, a family discussing the merits of a three legged picnic table, and some guy who goes to bachelor parties. The seating arrangements are spacious, and the interior has a blend of modern and traditional decor.

A lot of potential. Between the comedy events and the potential fundraiser opportunities that the Carriage Inn provides, there is a lot to do here.

As Arnold once said, "I'll be back!"

My husband and I have always enjoyed Dan's Carriage Inn on Date nights and taking family and friends out to lunch or dinner because of the welcoming and comfortable family feeling atmosphere and delicious food and beautiful ambiance .. My husband unexpectedly passed in June and choosing Dan's Carriage Inn for his Celebration of Life was the perfect choice ! Roy , the owner , was absolutely wonderful to work with , accommodating my requests quickly , allowing access to their beautiful banquet room whenever it was convenient for me , working the menu with me . The banquet room accommodated comfortably the 100 friends and family that traveled from all over the country , the huge wall screen was perfect for our family slideshow , plus plenty of room to accommodate several tables of my husbands photos and accommodate our guests comfortably . The banquet room also opened into a lovely fenced in court yard where the kids could play safely . The food was absolutely delicious ! The Banquet room has its own bar with was very convenient for our guests. Plus plenty of parking ! Because of Dan and his team , our heartbreaking day became a wonderful day of sharing precious memories of my beloved husband and reconnecting with family and friends in a warm , welcoming and relaxed venue ... This exact restaurant was my favorite to go to, until our last visit about a month ago. I usually enjoy the food and would kill for their French Onion Soup- but not anymore! We are not sure what happened, but the last visit will be our last for a while. The wait staff were miserable, rude and awkwardly being yelled at by the person in charge that night-- who was loudly talking about hating their shift and swearing infront of all the diners. I felt bad for the staff because they seemed to be unable to do anything right and the person yelling at them was physically unwell enough to walk around without knocking into tables. So she just kept miserably barking at them from wherever she was. Then two staff started crawling around under our booth without saying anything before hand (just startling) and just laughed as they walked away. I think they were looking for a phone that was lost. The entire meal was just filled with a grumbling shift manager and the restraunt really suffered from the attitude I think. Then the meals came and the food was awful. Nothing like we usually get there. That cinched it. I don't know what happened to the Carriage Inn, but I hope it returns to what it was or I no longer have a favorite...
