There are two cafes on the Main Street of tiny Northome, both well-reviewed. I chose Shining Light for the name and was glad I did. This the kind of home-town cafe where the Lions Club meets and the Senior Center displays their quilt raffle. Specials that Friday were fried fish bites with sweet potato fries and bean soup. I ordered a California burger with cheese to go. (There are a couple of picnic tables in the parking lot.) The cafe is Teener's and she does all the baking and cooking. When I got to my car and opened the to-go box, I found that Teener bakes the hamburger buns, too! A beautiful bun, a generous, well-cooked patty, fully melted cheese, tomatoes that looked and tasted like they came from someone's garden and all the other fixings, potato chips on the side. Decided to give it a try again for breakfast and we got menus within 15 min. Food took over an hour for four people. Everyone that came in after us was served before us. The prices are ridiculous. Nearly 50 dollars for 4 cans of pop and 4 omelets. Ordered the omelet with mushrooms etc it had no mushrooms and burnt ham. So burnt it was black. Hashbrowns were all watery in the middle. Just a headache of an experience. Wouldn't recommend this...
