Birthday cake for my mom's 85th birthday party.

PROS: It was delicious, as expected. It was reasonably priced. It was ready on time. The roses and rest of the trim were pretty, if rather ordinary.

CONS: The person who took my order over the phone did not write the wording I requested down correctly. When I called the morning of pick-up to confirm my pick-up time and that everything was on track, I went back over the details and we found the word, "birthday" had been left off of the request.

The fix for not having the correct wording was to squeeze the word, "Birthday" in where it didn't really fit. The unattractive writing and spacing detracted from how pretty the rest of the cake was. TBH, even without trying to squeeze a word in, the spacing was going to be pretty bad. That was disappointing.

I had also asked for a design element of looped pearls in icing. I was told at the time I ordered that they were uncertain as to whether or not they could fulfill that request. I asked to be called if they couldn't do it, however, the request for that design element wasn't even mentioned on the order.

None of this is the end of the world. It's cake. Our world doesn't hang in the balance based on icing, and it tasted delicious. However, I expected more professional service and something a little more professional looking, so I was disppointed.

Bottom line, don't order over the phone. Go in person with your request clearly written out and make sure it is attached to the order. Based on this experience, you probably shouldn't expect anything beyond basic, competent, cake decorating skills and, while I would order from them again because their baked goods never fail to be delicious, I wouldn't ask for anything...

I've loved Wood Bakery since I was a child. My mother was a regular there almost every week or every other week. Also, I/my family has ordered all but one of my birthday and graduation cakes there for the past 24 years. They have always been tasty; however, this year was pretty disappointing. After ordering my birthday cake, they called me saying they couldn't do all of it because I asked for specialty things in regards to decorating. Okay, that's understandable, but the lady who called me was rather rude on the phone. She spoke unprofessionally about the girl who took my order and snapped at me a little bit. It was like how dare I ask for such things? In that past, they had done all kinds of decorating for me. Additionally, not all the writing was on my cake when finished and they didn't call me to tell me that would be taken off as well. Sadly, after 24 years of being a customer there, I have not been back and plan to look into ordering my cakes somewhere else. I understand having a limit to how much they can do, but just tell me nicely. I'm a rational person and honestly I wasn't upset because they couldn't do all of the decorations. Now, mind you, I didn't get to the bakery until afternoon. Finally made it to Woods bakery, and it was well worth the wait. Goodies galore, only problem they sold out of their Easter cookies. With that said, there was still plenty to choose from for my visit. Little pies and my favorite cherry with struesel crumbs, cinnamon Raisin Bread with icing, small cupcakes filled with icing, and last but not least, glazed donuts. I have to admit it was the best glazed donut I've ever tasted, so light & fluffy with just the perfect glaze on it. I could eat quite a few but stopped at one. Lest I forget, they make strollers, coffee cakes, mini cakes for birthdays, regular sized cakes and pies, Danish rolls, mini pies, cross buns, breads, noodles, muffins and tons of special cookies Frozen goodies, too, like carrot cake, cup cakes, birthday cakes.
