Many different gluten-free blogs and pages recommended Mercurio's for top notch gluten-free pizza, so we decided to test it out. Placed an order online for two pizzas and there was not an option for gluten free dough, so we politely requested it in both the special instructions for each pizza and the special instructions for the whole order. Total came to $50 including tip, expensive, but it's gluten-free so that's expected. Checkout screen let us know there might be some extra charges on arrival, not a problem, we expected a few bucks. On arrival, we were berated by the teenage front of house staff for not selecting "gluten-free dough" when ordering. I explained the option wasn't available, and was told I was wrong, and was charged an extra $18. What for? Beats me. Pizza itself wasn't anything to write home about, and certainly not worth $70. Bland, lacking in flavor, and the crust couldn't handle the weight of the sparse toppings. Upon checking the Online Ordering option later, it appears that "gluten-free" is only an option when ordering Sicilian Pizzas. It is not an option for either the Pizza Rosse or Pizza Bianche. If Google will let me add images, I will attach the screenshots. Regardless, the request was marked in the special instructions multiple times so it shouldn't have been a problem. Mercurio's, please update your website, and don't blame the customer. We will not be back.

I had the Salsiccia E Friarielli. A white pizza. It was wood fire baked. Now this is normally doesn't mean much except a higher chance for your crust to be burnt, however; they did it amazing justice. The crust was the lighter and airiest crust I've ever had. I recommend eating that as soon as you can once it is off the fire. You'll probably lose roughly 60% of the texture if you take it home in a box so I highly recommend eating at the restaurant for maximum flavor and texture. The pizza was really really good. Though roughly half way through the pizza the crust lost its peak airiness. The pizza was still very good and was still one of the most tender crusts I've ever eaten so it will still be great but not magical. The gelato selection was fantastic. No complaints. I got a small waffle cone of their dulce de letca and it was very very good. Just the right balance of sweetness and creaminess. I would pick this place over a fair amount of ice cream shops. The wait staff were all very nice even though they were super busy. They worked really well and made sure I was taken care of.

My first trip to Mercurios in O'Hara was underwhelming. It has the appearance of a nice, upscale gourmet pizza pub, with an impressive, huge pizza oven. I was initially presented with an impressive flip top bottle of chilled water and glass, in pour your own style. Unfortunately, like many upscale Pittsburgh pub-restaurants, the water was obviously just tap water, without enhanced filtration or spring water alternative. "All show and NO go." After seeing their pedestrian tap beer selecton, I ordered a Stella, and ordered a Margarta Pizza. The pizza looked like a nice gourmet pizza, but for some unknown reason, the dough crust was not crisp, but rather was rubbery, as was the pie bottom, not what one should expect from their impressive 1,000 degree pizza oven. To be a "real" gourmet pizza pub, this restaurant needs to improve it's pizza dough, which is probably made with "all purpose flour," and should improve its draft beer selection. It is not worth returning again unless their pizza dough is improved. Too bad, for an otherwise impressive facility.

I stopped into this newly opened location earlier this evening to get a gelato to go. Upon arrival I did not feel welcomed with hospitality. The young woman who served my ice cream seemed impatient and annoyed. Being my first time I wasn’t sure what I wanted immediately upon arrival. I felt rushed and handled with an attitude when I asked for her favorite or suggestions. Once I left, got home, n halfway through my cup - I found a hair. I was highly disappointed because I tried to brush off the behavior that already nearly ruined my first experience. I called and asked to speak with the GM, whose name was Jason. I described the situation and before finishing he aggressively asked “A hair? Well then why didn’t you get my attention when you were here, then I could’ve helped you...” I reiterated that I had taken my dessert to go. I described the young woman as having glasses, short hair, and a nose ring. He denied that I was speaking with the right place, and told me “we have no one in this entire building with glasses and short hair, and a nose ring? Those aren’t even allowed.” Then in a mannerism as if I was a small child he said slowly, “this is Mer-cur-io’s.... in Fox chapel....” I was astounded, and said no, I am speaking with the right place. “Oh! Well actually, we do have one girl with glasses here. And her hair is short...” seconds later, “omg! And she does have a nose ring. Wow, it must be small because I’ve never even seen that.” He did not seem apologetic or embarrassed, and laughed the situation off. He offered one scoop on the house next time I came in, but I don’t think it’s worth my energy or...

This place came highly recommended to us by family as a quick and exceptional restaurant. Unfortunately, this was not the experience.

We arrived at the restaurant, which wasn’t even half full, placed our order at 6:55, however according to our receipt our order was not placed until 7:18. We received salads quickly, but we did not receive our pizza until 8:20. After a full, pizza-less hour of watching people who came in after us receive our food and get their checks, our waitress came by and told us that our pizza would be comped and would be right out. We were so hungry that two people from our group got up and ordered gelato to hold them over. When we received the receipt, nothing was comped and we were charged full price. When we asked about it, our waitress denied offering to comp the pizzas and couldn’t do anything because her manager had left. Ultimately, they agreed to comp the gelatos.

The pizza was good, but overall we were disappointed that we waited so much longer than everyone else in the restaurant, and ultimately nobody from the restaurant acknowledged this after telling us our food...
