Great tasting coffee, comforting atmosphere, peaceful outdoor area as well. Very welcoming & a motley crew I think just about anyone could meld into. Just felt like a safe place in an area not exactly known to be peaceful. Their mission is undoubtedly the right thing to do & very admirable. I'll definitely return & hope to hang out more, it's just that kind of place.
!!!UPDATE!!! Apologies in advance for being long winded but some of these comments didn't sit right with me. I simply cannot believe some of the things people have posted about Joe's Addiction. "I wouldn't let my kids out of the car" "Someone was smoking at a table next to me." "The staff was short with me." "The people were dirty." "My friend relapsed because of Joe's." " People were fighting with weapons!" Do you even give a thought to what these people go through everyday their doors open? These are VOLUNTEERS they are not paid to be kind to people. The people making these cruel fabricated comments apparently have not experienced the lives of the people Joe's serves. I would be willing to bet your children would not be harmed at this establishment. Your children need to know that these "homeless drug addicts" exist, not just on TV. They need to see the existence to someday help alleviate this problem. Joe's Addiction is a NON SMOKING establishment. I know because I was in no certain terms informed by the staff & half of the room of this rule on my first visit when I lit up. I quickly stepped outside to finish my gert. So I doubt the validity of your statement. The staff is bombarded from the time the doors open with people needing things so if they do not welcome you immediately or get your coffee perfect for you be patient because they will. They may not know who you think you are! Granted some of the people do not meet your expectations of hygiene consider where they have been. Either by choice or not they have been sleeping in an alley, on the street, in a box, in their car, & any number of places without a shower or safety of a comfy home. Sit down with someone less fortunate or don't have your level of cleanliness & you might just figure out that they are not much different from you because you see everyone of us is just one mistake, one bad decision, one pill or line, or mental snap from stepping into their shoes. TRUST! A relapse, in my experience, has already been planned in an addict's mind before it takes place. It's extremely unlikely that a relapse is caused by any one person or an establishment. Sure there are addicts practicing & recovering who frequent this coffee shop but from my observation & reading about Joe's mission it is, again unlikely, that anyone will relapse just from an environment like this because drug use on the grounds is seriously frowned upon. Joe's Addiction is located in an area where you get stopped by the police if you fart sideways (pardon the analogy). I've been warned since I started driving at 15, "Watch yourself in Valley Brook, they will stop you for anything." So I don't think for a minute that a bar room brawl inside or out wouldn't be stopped before it could begin. Joe's Addiction, the staff, the owners, & the patrons are continuing with the teachings of Jesus Christ. Peace, love, & understanding. ( WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT!) So before you post nasty comments about them dig deep in your inner self, find the compassion that God sewed into each of us & practice it before you speak. THANK YOU & MAY GOD...
Read moreALL GLORY AND PRAISE TO THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST. THIS IS TO MRS. JAMIE AND TO WHOM MAY CONCERN. THAT WAS A VERY NICE CHRISTMAS DINNER FOR EVERYONE TODAY, HOWEVER, I OBSERVED A YOUNG BLACKMAN THAT WAS HOMELESS ALSO AND I WATCHED HIM FROM THE TIME HE CAME IN UNTIL THE TIME HE LEFT THE BUILDING, HE TOOK OUT TRASH, HE CLEANED OTHER HOMELESS PEOPLE'S TABLES AND WAS SO POLITE WITH EVERYONE, HE JUST RAN CICLES AROUND THE PLACE WITH SUCH JOY AND A HAPPINESS TO PLEASE GOD, SO IT SEEMED. BUT ALL OF A SUDDEN I NOTICED HOW SOME OF THE STAFF BEGAN TO MISS TREAT HIM AND EVEN MRS. JAMIE TOLD HIM THAT HE WAS DISRESPECTFUL EVEN THOUGH I HAD SEEN NO SUCH THING FROM HIM BUT HELPING OTHERS LIKE HIMSELF. YES SHE SCOLDED THAT YOUNG MAN SO BAD THAT IF THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN ME I PROBABLY WOULD HAVE CRIED, BUT HE STILL SMILED AÑD SAID, GOD BLESS YOU AND I APOLOGIZE VERY POLITELY (EVEN HIS EYES HAD LOVE IN THEM WHEN HE APOLOGIZED TO HER.) AND EVENTUALLY, WHEN THERE WAS NOTHING LEFT TO BE DONE, HE POLITELY LEFT THE BUILDING AND NO ONE AT ALL SAID THANK YOU. WE ARE TO LOVE ONE ANOTHER AT ALL COST AND THAT'S WHAT I SEEN IN THIS YOUNGMAN, HE TRULY DISPLAYED TO EVERY SINGLE ONE JESUS AND GODS LOVE. WE MUST FORGIVE AND PRAY FOR THE LOVE OF GOD TO BE A TRUE MANIFESTATION IN OUR LIVES FOR EVERY SINGLE PERSON AND TO NOT MISTREAT ANYONE, FOR GOD IS THE REVENGER OF ALL SUCH, GOD ONLY HAS THE TRUE OUTRAGEOUS AND UNCONDITIONAL LOVE FOR US ALL, WE ARE JUST TO SHOW HIS LOVE THROUGH US. 1CORINTHIANS 13:1-13 MAY GOD HELP US ALL. JESUS SAID, IF YOU'VE DONE IT UNTO THE LEAST OF THESE OF MY BROTHEREN, YOU'VE DONE IT UNTO ME. SHE MAY NOT ALLOW ME BACK OR THAT YOUNG MAN AFTER READING THIS, BUT I PRAY HIS LOVE FOR PEOPLE AND MRS. JAMIE'S ALSO WILL CONTINUE, AND THAT THEY BOTH WALK AS OBEDIENT CHILDREN OF GOD AND NOT TO SPEAK EVIL OF ONE ANOTHER, MAY THE PEACE OF GOD CONTINUE...
Read moreNot going to lie - I was a little surprised walking into the shop as I was just passing through after a bike race and I’m from out of state, so when I walked in and saw a lady reading to a group of people obviously on the outskirts of society and no one behind the counter I was a little confused. The woman reading, who I believe to be the owner, kindly helped me and quickly poured me a great cup of black coffee. Afterwards I did some research about the coffee shop and learned about their Christian mission, which made me glad I spent my money there - not because they are Christian, but because of what they do. They serve everyone regardless of whatever demons they may be struggling with, regardless of their clothes, and even in spite of their beliefs or lack of. The people running Joe’s Addiction are truly Christian - not the Sunday Christian that simply puts money in a basket, but a Christian who directly helps hose who need it. Disregard all the reviews from the “Local Tour Guides”. They only care about conforming to social conventions. This isn’t an ordinary coffee shop. It’s a place where all are welcome even if they don’t look, act, smell, or think like you, and if you want a good cup of Joe, they have that too. It won’t be for everyone, but that’s alright. Just keep in mind they’re doing real charity, not the stuff...
