I was fortunate enough to dine at Roxie's BBQ Sunday. I met Tyler and Kim Wagers along with their son Hayden. Tyler is a 2nd generation Pitmaster who opened this long established BBQ restaurant in its new location in May of this year. You can find Roxie's BBQ 1.3 miles north of US Hwy 62 on OK Hwy 10 overlooking the Illinois river. You can't miss the place as it has a cliff behind it! Djuana Leedy Pennington and I started with a Tahlequah Twinkie and had the 3 meat combo. We made short work of the stuffed jalapeno. Our combo consisted of ribs, brisket and turkey. The sides were Kami's Mac and Cheese and homemade slaw. This was served with a piece of Texas toast, a dill pickle and pickled onions. We also had from the table Tyler's on BBQ sauce. The food was of superior quality. The ribs perfectly cooked with just a bit of pull from the bone. The brisket had been smoked and rendered until it was easily cut with a fork. The turkey smoked and juicy. The mac and cheese was a little soupy but delicious. The slaw outstanding. I gobbled the pickled onions and dill pickle. The sauce... I did not know what to think on first tasting. It is unlike any sauce I have ever had, period. It was interesting on the meat. I will try it again warmed up on meat, to give it a fair shake, but right now, I am undecided. Critical review of meat, ribs great although I like more sauce caramelized on the meat. Brisket delicious and prepared well. I like a bit more bark. Turkey perfect! The sides were incredibly tasty, I wanted more! Somehow in the mix I did not know about the Sweet and Spicy Pickles that Tyler has created to compliment BBQ. He let me sample them. Simply a game changer. They are outstanding. Tyler came around the restaurant speaking with people. I found out from the waitress that he was the owner and the pit master. He stopped by and discussed the meal. He was kind enough to let me see his kitchen and his pit area. I must say, I was quite impressed by the cleanliness and order I saw. It is a smooth running machine. He has it down to a science. I found his restaurant very appealing. I was quite impressed with Tyler's transparency and willingness to let me see his kitchen and pit. Even more appealing was his desire to make our BBQ eating experience the best he can create. He is totally open to suggestions and comments. Don't get me wrong, he is his own man with tried and true recipes handed down and perfected by his hard work. But he remains open to innovation and improvement. To sum it up, I will be back to eat at Roxie's BBQ. I will choose more items from the menu and I will be eating more of those sweet and spicy dill pickles Tyler has created. If you are in eastern Oklahoma or NW Arkansas, do yourself a favor and stop in for some BBQ. You won't be sorry! Tell Tyler, Dean sent you.

A beautiful warm fall day. Perfect for a spin on 10, and a big plate of BBQ along the scenic Illinois river byway. Roxie’s BBQ is the place for lunch and dinner. A destination restaurant for bikers, car enthusiast and river floaters. Outside dining only, order at the window and your food is delivered to your table. The tables surround the shady sides of the building. Most all are covered, either under the patio or under each table’s individual umbrella. Tall metal stools are lined up along the north side of the patio behind a slim bar like table. They looked very comfortable. We selected two and relaxed. In minutes we were enjoying delicious Roxie’s BBQ. Fast friendly service. A football sized baked potato, with tender smokey chopped brisket for me. It was loaded with meat, cheese, chopped green onion, a little sour cream and the house BBQ sauce. Get a bottle of Roxie’s BBQ sauce to take home. My wife had a monstrous tray of food, the meat stacked brisket sandwich. She ordered her meal with the spicy slaw and tangy mustard potato salad. It also came with a bag of chips. Both trays had house pickled purple onion and a wedge of dill pickle. Excellent BBQ, generous filling trays of food. Check the pictures! And for dessert….a spin, north bound on 10. It was a perfect day to enjoy the curves. I made it all the way north to Hwy 412 without a single car in front of me to slow me down. My radar detector was silent for the entire trip. About mid-way there was a County Sheriff in a pull out on the west side of Hwy 10. His radar was off. Likely taking an afternoon power nap. I hope I didn’t disturb his sleep.

DISCLAIMER: At this time, I'm honored to be a Top 5 Reviewer in Oklahoma for Google. I do my best to be fair and honest but realize your experience may differ from mine. So, please keep that in mind when considering this restaurant, establishment, and/or venue. MY REVIEW: First, their new building is wonderful with a comfortable restaurant and bar area and a wrap around deck with picnic tables for outside dining. It is also a very family friendly place and perfect for a nice meal after floating the Illinois River, a campout in one of many surrounding campgrounds, or just while out for a drive. I was hoping for a smoked turkey dinner but was disappointed to be told they were out of turkey. So, I ordered the chopped beef and hot links dinner with curly fries and baked beans. The meal came with a pickle spear, a small portion of pickled red onion, and a piece of toast. The hot links were delicious, as were the beans and curly fries. The chopped beef lacked much flavor and seemed a little dry. The portions were generous. The barbeque sauce was just average and it is the only one they have available. I found it rather bland and would have enjoyed a spicier sauce or at least another choice. I also wished they would have had a pickle, pepper and onion bar like several barbecue places in the Tulsa and surrounding areas have. That would have been a plus for me. The service was very good. Even though it is a 1-1/2 hour drive for me, I hope to return again sometime to try...
